Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

  15. 1955LetterENA 2716.11 + ENA 2716.10

Letterbook in Judaeo-Arabic (fragment) likely eighteenth- or ninteenth-century that contains drafts and possibly copies of business-related correspondence. The letters frequently use the phrase "יא אכי/ O my brother" which implies the that this was business correspondence between brothers (l. 2r, 17r, 19r). […] Section two of ENA 2716.11 l.21r lists a quantity of "ריאל פראנסא" which Kenneth Cuno observes was a way of referencing the notional unit of account 1 riyal:90 medin/para in this time period (The Pasha's Peasants, 211).

For an early modern document that fits clearly in this specific sub-genre of communal lists, see: Moss. IXa,3.20 (PGPID 26885). The paleographical dating could be 18th- or 19th-century, but the scribal hand is very idiosyncratic so this estimate is tentative. […] The first entry is one of the more legible ones from the entire document: "torah finials of Yom Qīppūr(sic) from(? One entry on the left side of the document mentions "the āliyya of the Q[ahal] Q[adosh] Porṭegezes (sic)," probably a reference to the Portuguese Congregation of early modern Cairo.

This is a famous physician: see https://scholarlyeditions.brill.com/reader/urn:cts:arabicLit:0668IbnAbiUsaibia.Tabaqatalatibba.lhom-tr-eng1:14.29. (See also T-S NS 264.22, which mentions a volume in the handwriting of Ibn al-ʿAynzarbī. It's possible that fragments in his handwriting have been preserved in the Geniza—Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿa emphasizes that Ibn al-ʿAynzarbī was an excellent and prolific scribe.) This document also mentions Karīm al-Dawla ʿAytham, "one of the great amirs of al-Ḥāfiẓ." The verso document also concerns the purchase of the property on the recto, and mentions the Amīr Athīr al-Mulk Sharaf al-Dawla wa-Fārisuhā, Abū Saʿd b.

Letter in Arabic script to unknown recipients from a certain Ibrāhīm mentioning a variety of Christian contacts such as Abū Adraūs and Abū Jirjis. […] In addition to the letters, Ibrāhīm mentions a garment (kiswa) that his mother seeks to acquire, apparently after trying it on. The term kiswa, or kisāʾ, can apply to a wide range of clothing, cloths, and drapes, or to clothing in general.... In various medieval Arabic sources, the term refers to an enveloping mantle of the sort worn in public by women, or it could serve as a more or less generic term for a wrap....

Dating: 16th century, based on Avraham David's assessment. The contents of the letter are quite difficult and merit further examination; there are a handful of words that do not appear to be Hebrew or Arabic and many place names, some obscure. […] In the remainder of the letter, the writer mentions various European currencies including peraḥim and coronas. In the margin he mentions trade in raisins (margin, 1, 6) and sulfur (margin, 5).

Letter from Barakāt b. Manṣūr, unknown location, to Eliyyahu the Judge (active 1204–41), in Fustat. […] Same sender and same addressee as BL OR 10656.16. Much of the letter is an angry tirade about the lack of response from Eliyyahu and his behavior that brought about some conflict (tashāḥun) between elders in his family, and their humiliation and the rejoicing of their enemies (this part of the story is clearest in ll. 18–19 and 26–28). […] The sender complains further about the lack of letters and says that even if Eliyyahu has taken a vow not to correspond with him, he should send a letter to 'the judge' concerning the disputed household objects.
