Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Model letters here include: asking someone to do something for you; responding to a request to do something for someone; and congratulations upon the birth of a son (ghulām) or daughter (ibna/jāriya); it is not immediately clear if these terms which literally mean "male slave" and "female slave" refer to actual slaves here (probably not, and Goitein does not seem to think so; he also notes that he has never encountered an actual Geniza letter with congratulations on the birth of a girl).

To be sure, the merchants concerned, both Muslims and Jews, had entrusted the Wakīl with this task. On the other hand, it is astonishing that the Muslim merchants and one Jew, Nahrai, had to make the long and dangerous journey from Cairo to ʿAidhāb in order to take over their goods. […] The reason for this extraordinary precaution obviously was the following: the Oriental goods were sent "en bloc", with the share, qisṭ, of each merchant indicated in the list handed over to the Wakīl.

The other known petitions to Saladin in the Geniza include T-S K2.96, BL OR 5566B.12, and ENA 3079.6 (PGPID 39495). This one has many fewer titles than in T-S K2.96 and BL OR 5566B.12 and refers to him only as 'malik' and not 'sulṭān,' so it may date to his period as Fatimid vizier (1169–74).

It also refers to a period of three years, so the 533 date is probably the end of the 3-year lease. The document itself is dated the last third of Shevaṭ 1448 Seleucid = January 1136 CE.

The handwriting is distinctive, with stylized loops at the end of all the descenders. Dating: Perhaps 12th century; more precise dating may be possible based on the people named in the letter (e.g., Abū l-Murajjā Sālim and Rabbenu Zakkay).

Some of the dowry item listed include: a "cashmere shawl"(שאל כשמיר), a "tradition(al) shawl" (שאל תקליד), a bed "canopy/mosquito net" (נמוסייא), among many other entries. The ketubba may have been intentionally torn in half because of a significant error in line 5 where the scribe haphazardly elided the words "בתולייכי כסף" (indicating the mohar of a previously unmarried woman).

A number of features indicate that the writer is a Greek-speaker, of which the most concrete is the epithet "the enameller" (l. 18), which is given in Greek. That this is not merely a nickname or a calqued expression is clear from the fact that it is given with the Greek definite article, and in the accusative case to suit the context.
