The first contract, written during the Feast of Tabernacles 5304 (= 1544 CE) in Egypt, mentions the sum of 59.5 עתמאני (i.e. "Ottoman" as an alternate label for silver akçe). In the second contract, Shalom agrees to pay Abraham the same amount using gold peraḥim (ducat equivalents) from the coinage of Sultan Sulaymān.

The letter is quite difficult and written in an elevated register with learned quotations and allusions. Goitein comments, "We never know whether he is speaking in jest or in earnest." Some clues about the context of the letter are found toward the bottom: the sender praises God for returning "our master to the seat of his fathers," apparently referring to the current Head of the Jews (ll. 20–21); he rebukes the addressees for neglecting to convey his request to "our master," because otherwise the fatwā would not have been delayed so long ("unless there was some eclipse in the world... preventing me from seeing the dawn") (ll. 28–32); and he refers to "mawlāy al-meʿuelle" (l. 35). The first part of the fragment preserved here is a long, cryptic passage about a night filled with anxiety and insomnia, with each event of the night attached to a biblical verse.

The contemporary chronicler and poet Niqūla al-Turk (1763-1828) offers further context for understanding how the massacre unfolded. He states that the cavalry in question were led by a certain Ibn ʿAqīl (ابن عقيل) from Damascus to Safed, where they 'pillaged the Jewish quarter' and cornered a French-allied defensive force in the Citadel. This latter detachment consisted of fifty soldiers under the command of a certain Muṣtafa Beshīr, who defended the Safed Citadel until French cavalry reinforcements arrived."
