Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

At some point before her marriage to Yiṣḥaq ha-Levi, the bride Sarah may have been engaged to a certain Shelomo b. Raḥamīm Khamīṣ/Ḥamīṣ(?). The latter couple appears in the draft engagement deed JRL SERIES A 502 (PGPID 28279). This ketubba's ʿiqar payment of 100 zuz (instead of 200 zuz) implies that Sarah was previously married before her nuptials with Yiṣḥaq ha-Levi.

Some of the entries incude notes indicating people "באסם / in the name of" and on occasion locational notes, such as on the recto "דאלך ענד פלונבו" or "this is at Palonbo's" (l. 8r, 17r in left side of bifolium) or "׳ענד ס׳ לוריא" which is also "at S[eñor] Luria's" (l.16r on right side of bifolium).

Goitein and Friedman suggest this is the Maldives, but Lambourn ("Twelfth-century Malabar through Geniza sources," in Sur les Chemins d'Onagre, 2018) says the Laccadives would be a more logical itinerary en route to Aden. The word derives from dvīpa in Sanskrit or Malayalam, meaning "islands," so the reference in the letter is vague enough to support multiple interpretations.

The writer is writing about his desire to construct (a room?)
