(It is also possible that mutālaba refers to seeking legal redress against someone who has wrongfully appropriated the property.) […] The title of the governor, ending in al-dawla, dates the letter to the Fatimid period. The text also contains a taqbîl clause in which the petitioner kisses the hand of the addressee rather than the ground, so this puts it likely but not definitely in the late Fatimid period.

The inspection was held by a Muslim scholar named Afḍal al-Dīn, and it was completed on Wednesday, the 16th of Jumāda al-Awwal 859 AH. Later, on Sunday the 15th of Jumāda al-ʾUkhra of that year, the said judge “proceeded” – here the text breaks off, but he probably proceeded to inspect further houses of worship. […] The synagogue boundaries are described as follows: from the south, the house of Yūsef al-Ṣayrafī; from the north the house of ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Farrāsh; from the east the alley (zuqāq) and there is the synagogue's door; and from the west the house of Ibn Tāj al-Rayyīs and of others.

Letter from a Jewish shipowner from Alexandria. Dating: ca. 1212 CE. He provides an exciting story about traveling to Cyprus but being diverted by a storm to Tarsus (then the capital of Lesser Armenia, a Christian kingdom ruled by Leon II (1187–1219)). The shipowner was afraid that the king would force him to take up his residence in Tarsus instead of Alexandria. He mentions Abu l-Surur and asks for something to be sent and says that al-Shaykh al-Ra’is thanks the addressee. From lines 5-10, he discusses the affair of Ibn al-Taffal (presumably identical with his nemesis Yefet b. Shelomo the physician known as ‘the son of the fuller’; cf. the other fragments tagged with ‘Ibn al-Taffal’). Moshe appears to be gloating over how Ibn al-Taffal had to leave Qalyub with his tail between his feet, but he is also anxious to hear the news of how Ibn al-Taffal has fared in Fustat, “as if I were present.” […] Verso The tail end of a letter in Judaeo-Arabic, also by Moshe b. Ṭahor partners with Abū Saʿd b. Abū l-ʿAlāal-Ṣabbāgh in an apothecary shop. Moshe is paid 6 dirhams a month agrees to work for a year and a half. His wage is guaranteed by Abū Saʿd’s father Abū l-ʿAlāʾ (ll.7-8). Because of the guarantee of Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, three qinyanim are performed: Moshe's agreement to work, Abū Saʿd’s agreement to pay, and the guarantee of Abū l-ʿAlāʾ’. Although the parties’ relationship is described as a partnership, Moshe's wages being fixed suggests an employment agreement, though likely not an apprenticeship, both because Moshe is not a youth (line 5 alludes to his five sons) and is said to manage or set up the store.

Pervīz himself is clearly a high regimental officer, and if he is sending someone to Alexandria en route to Mecca, he himself must be located north or west of Al- exandria, possibly even in the imperial capital. The tone of his appeal to Salmūn makes it clear that for anyone passing through Alexandria, the customs director was an invaluable contact. Perhaps the most noteworthy feature of this letter is its emphasis on hometown ties: Pervīz insists that Salmūn must help Manṣūr because they both come from Alexandria. Manṣūr is not a common name among military personnel from the Ottoman central lands, and if this Manṣūr is a native Arabic-speaker from Alexandria, then he represents an exceedingly rare instance of an Arab joining the Ottoman military and rising to mid-level officer rank."
