The first part of the introduction is a eulogy, alphabetically arranged, to the learned people of Aleppo and their leader, the head of the court, R. Yaʿaqov b. Joseph. The letter is written in the hand of Shemuel b. Moshe.

Pococke 400, fol. 143a at digital.bodleian.ox.ac.uk). […] Interestingly, in the published editions of Kalīla wa-Dimna and in the Arabic manuscripts, the third animal is a babr (tiger/leopard/lion) whereas in this fragment it is spelled "nabr," which does not refer to any large cats according to the Arabic dictionaries. Presumably the letter was undotted in the Arabic manuscript which Yosef used as a template and he mistakenly read it as a nūn, or else "nabr" was a dialectal variant.

[…] Next, there are 11 lines in the hand of Moses Maimonides, likely his notes to himself and/or an assistant when he filed away this letter: "When the responsa to their queries were delayed from reaching them due to an illness [. . .], they sent this fourth letter requesting the responsa and the Guide, and this is the text of their letter. Their chief creditor is Abraham Castro (d. 967 AH/1560 CE), director of Egypt’s mint early in the period of Ottoman rule.... […] Budayr] owe Joseph Castro— and through him, as it turns out, his father Abraham—1,500 niṣf fiḍḍa, possibly from a loan.... As the left side of the document’s verso explains, they pledge a three-quarters share of a boat as security for this debt."

[…] There is some damage to the sender's signature but if this reading of his title is correct, this may be a letter sent from Istanbul by a member of the Imperial Guard / Bostancı corps. This seems plausible given that the lettermentions at least four other members of the Ottoman military– Sinān Ağa, Qāsim Ağa, ʿİssa Ağa, and Meḥmed Aǧa.

The testimony declares that the debt Manṣūr owes is proven (kitāb lahu daynan ʿalayhi ḥatman wa-ḥaqqan wājiban lāziman ḥāllan lahu ʿalayhi), and that there is no record of a bankruptcy established in his favor (wa-lā yaddaʿī lahu fi dhālika falsan walā ʿadman). Hence, the creditors are entitled to take from him what they want, when they want it, and how they want it, either at night or in the evening or in the day (yāʾkhudhuhu bihi wa-bi-mā shāʾ minhu ayyu waqtin shāʾ wa-kayf shāʾ min laylin aw nahārin masaʾin aw ṣabāḥin). […] The second clause in the sentence in this letter could also be wa-anta ʿalā ʿayn mā tarāhu, meaning '[you received word from Nahray about X] without having seen him.' […] This appears to be the only Geniza document known thus far to mention the settlement of Qiman, probably Qiman al-ʿArūs just outside the Fayyūm (it's much less likely to be Qiman Fāris at the northwest of Madīnat al-Fayyūm).

[…] If the goods saved were pepper, lac and brazilwood it is safe to assume that the ship did not founder, in which case these products were likely to be spoiled, but was captured by pirates and later on recaptured, most probably by the Fatimid fleet. It is interesting to learn from our letter, l.19–margin l.1, that a merchant could take a credit from the Dīwān, government, in ʿAidhāb.
