Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

There ensued a legal struggle which involved an official titled Sitr al-Dawla, apparently Abū ʿAbdallāh al-Ma'mūn Yaḥyā Ibn Kātib al-Baṭā'iḥī, who became the vizier in Egypt following al-Afḍal.

The next bilingual phrase is damaged, but could be interrelated, ending in: .n yarım sen (".. you half"). The first line of the verso, contains the clearly rendered phrase: bir safar qīlūrman ביר ספר קילורמן ("I will go on a trip"), which bears evidence of the Uzbek future first-person indefinite conjugation -arman/-urman for the verb qilmoq (to do). This conjugation form does not exist in Ottoman Turkish. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Uzbek_verbs // https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/qilmoq On the recto, the first legible phrase pairing reads: ולא מסאפר: מן ספרכא... “As for my state, I inform the masters that I came down with diarrhea, and I endured it. When it increased and multiplied, it became an illness. […] They concocted the medicine in the house of Rabbenu (ZL): every day, roasted seeds and the like, and a pullet, and he visited me frequently. And R. Eliyya the Judge was also generous. When I recovered after some days… [I came down] with what was worse than it… ophthalmia in my eye on the night of Shabbat Shoftim… a painful scream, against my will, all night…. May God afflict my enemies [with what I was afflicted with]. The illness became public.

[…] His riding animal brings him to the lands of Banū Shaybān and he enters the courtyard of a house. A woman calls out to extend hospitality, and he responds "yā sayyida, how can a frightened, pursued, terrified, persecuted person find peace... no one can rest with the government after him." She gives him advice and repeats the invitation. The Geniza fragment ends around here. In the parallel version, the woman summons the head of the household (or tribe?)

The tapering format of the lines is extremely similar to the copy of the Arabic text in the Library of Congress: https://www.wdl.org/en/item/3125/. On verso there is also a medical recipe in Arabic script using galingale, emblic, elephant fig, Ceylon cinnamon, gum Arabic, and honey (it is not immediately clear if this is part of the same work, al-Kīmiyā' al-Malikiyya).
