Most of a long, very distressed letter from Menaḥem, writing in Fusṭāṭ/Cairo, to a business associate, whose family lives in Fustāṭ/Cairo and who has traveled. The details of the case are difficult to follow and merit deeper examination. Menaḥem's enemies have gotten the upper hand, and they are gloating to the utmost, and he has lost a great deal of money. In what remains of the letter, he first mentions the visit of Lu'lu' ("may the enemies of Israel perish"), who may be identical with al-Raqqī, to a prison (where Menaḥem had been held?).

Letter from Shelomo b. Nissim ha-Levi al-Barqī, in Alexandria, to Mūsā b. […] Hopefully I will find someone to treat me, for here there is no medicine and no physician and nothing to strengthen my spirit (nafsī—Gil translates it as body)." […] Shelomo conveys his sympathies and explains that he only refrained from writing sooner so as not to increase Mūsā's preoccupations (shughl al-sirr). The letter also mentions the purchase of books. (Information from Gil, Kingdom, Vol. 4, #646.)

Indeed, reading with a boy without first teaching him the alphabet and the vowel signs is of no avail and of no use. Therefore, if the facts are as you reported, please instruct that teacher to act according to this letter and to teach methodically, if he wants to be a teacher of Jewish children.
