  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

The cantor had been “accused of having assembled a group of young men and danced a zuhdī dance with them" — presumably an allegation of homosexual behavior. The cantor lived in a small place outside Cairo, but on learning that his boss had been informed, he immediately set off for the city. […] When I learned about this matter, I became alarmed and relapsed. I decided to go to Cairo to clear my honor from that talk about me; but when I arrived at the Nile, I fainted. […] Information from Goitein, A Mediterranean Society, Volume 5, 202-203, and from Alexandra Kersley ('19), seminar paper on homosexuality in the Geniza, Fall 2018.

It is a draft of a statement (tiqrār) to be signed by Maimonides, the Judges and the Elders, to the effect that Avraham b. Yaḥyā ha-Levi, called al-Najīb, should get the payment of his capitation tax (jizya) to the amount of 1 2/3 dinars out of the revenue from the rents of a "block" (rabʿ) which was a pious foundation earmarked for poor people. […] This payment was to be in the place of a daily salary of 1/2 dirham to which al-Najīb was entitled for his supervision of the building of the Funduq ('hotel' or caravenserai), erected by Abū ʿImran Beḥir ha-Kohanim, certainly also a public building.

The creditor, Abū l-Riḍā ha-Shomer (the guard), loaned funds to the partnership as a corporation but not to the partners as individuals. Although the two partners contracted to work the same amount and to share profits and losses equally, the partnership lacks sufficient funds to repay the loan. […] Pressured by Hiba's refusal to pay his share of the debt, the other partner (Mūsā b. Bishr, who appears also in ENA 4011.55) brings Hiba to court. The result of the court’s action was mediation (“tawassaṭū”), and Hiba agreed to pay Mūsā a single dinar, to which the latter would add the balance of three dinars. The initial loan amount and the repayment amount were both four dinars, and that it seems that Abū al-Riḍā did expect to garner profit from the loan directly.

"Everyone who has arrived from your area confirms in your name that you, may God grant you honor, are remaining this year in al-Andalus." The writer is distressed to have learned that the addressee is in Granada, for had the bearer of the letter been able to tarry one more day, he would have sent the money received from the sale of Ḥalfon's merchandise (it was subsequently sent to Almería). […] Gil and Fleischer identified the writer as the famous biblical commentator Yiṣḥaq ibn ʿEzrā, but Friedman disagrees based on the layout in Ibn ʿEzrā's letters and the spelling of the word allāh with a single lām as a fence against writing out the divine name, whereas Ibn ʿEzrā wrote the word Allāh in full.

Dated: 15 Dhū l-Ḥijja 870 AH (Sunday 29 July 1466 CE). The raʾīs al-yahūd, Yūsuf b. Khalīfa, and his deputy, Shemuʾel b. Naṣr, promise not to prevent the physician Manṣūr b. Ibrahīm b. al-Abraṣ (son of the leper, or possibly the redhead) from entering the synagogue in Zuwayla, the Jewish neighborhood in Cairo. The trigger for the conflict was a motion to renovate the synagogue, a fraught issue during the Mamluk period: in 859 AH (1454–55), under the relatively permissive Sultan Īnāl, a court authorized the repair of the old Rabbanite synagogue in Zuwayla and two Rabbanite synagogues in Fusṭāṭ, as well as the Qaraite synagogues in Cairo and Fusṭāṭ (a copy of this permit, from 18 January 1456, survived in the Qaraite archive in Cairo); under Qāʾitbāy, there was apparently a request to repair some synagogues, but the community objected, fearing that Muslims would destroy them, as they had threatened or sought to do in other cases. The judge is Shams al-Dīn al-Sulamī. Goitein discovered T-S Ar.38.131 and discussed it briefly in Med.

Dating: circa 1736 CE or later (per Hathaway) based on the mention of the Ottoman gold coin zeri maḥbūb which was first minted in Cairo in 1736 CE(?) (although the earliest coins from Cairo in Uslu's numismatic catalogue date to 1143 AH/ 1730 CE). It should also be noted, that 1703 CE (1115 AH) marked the first year these coins were minted in Istanbul, therefore yielding a plausible chronological threshold over three decades earlier (Kaan Uslu et. al., Osmanlı İmparatorluğu Madeni Paraları, 69, 114-115). […] This may be what our two documents describe, although in both cases, the wood is carried by Egyptian, or at least Arab, navigators (Ottoman Turkish singular, reʾīs): in T-S Ar. 39.435, ʿAbdullāh Anṣārī al-Saʿīdī delivers 275 qinṭārs of wood; in T-S NS 306.84, Muḥammad Shāfīʿī Būlāqī, from Cairo’s Nile port of Būlāq, delivers 300.
