Gotein likely succeeded in reading an obscure passage of the letter, but on its face it seems more like a straightforward appeal for financial aid invoking the afflictions of fate: "al-mamlūk mustaḥiyy min fiʿl hādha l-zamān alladhī ṣayyaranā [[anā]] lā naqdir al-qiyām bi-mā ʿalaynā min al-maḥqūq al-wājiba idh ḥukimat ʿalaynāal-iqrār. . . . wa-baʿd inna l-kull zamān wa-kull waqt aḥwāl yudabbirhā hādha l-falak bi-mā amar wa-bi-mā rakkab fīhi fa-l-mamlūk mustaḥiyy. . . ."

The last leaf of an inventory of an estate notes a debt of 125 dinars on tax-farming, but registers purses with gold and silver coins, vessels made of the same metals, promissory notes, and many other assets far exceeding a thousand dinars" (Med Soc II, p. 362 at note 47).

debt of the city of Fayyūm before Yom Kippur, but is not optimistic, because the official order on the decree (al-amr ʿalā l-marsūm al-karīm) is unchanged. (The scenario may be similar to that of T-S K2.96 (PGPID 18940), a tax farmer's petition for an exemption from government service which was denied, from the same period.) The blessing for the sultan "may his glory be strengthened" (ʿazza naṣruhū) is metonymically applied to either his decree (al-marsūm) or his order/rescript (al-amr). The sender also reports that he has sent a copy of the introduction to the commentary on Avot (probably of Maimonides), and asks the addressees to 'complete it' through the eighth chapter and send it back to him along with the copy of Sefer ha-Madaʿ (the first section of the Mishneh Torah) that they had promised.

However the sender of the letter is a woman ("all I desire is that you see me happy (f.)" / מא אשתהי אלא אן תרוני פרחאנה); she could have had Ḥananʾel write on her behalf. The letter is full of expressions of dependence on God's will. She explains also that she determined (by some kind of divination?) that a certain 'movement' (ḥaraka, ḥarakiyya) was favorable, and therefore she acted. She also mentions that 'al-Kohen' made her something beautiful (כרג כטך(?))

Concerning [...] b. al-Muʿallim Ṣadaqa the Samaritan Jew, a receipt of something (waṣala...), and a period of time. The occurrence of few sums of money indicates a fiscal account or commercial transaction - 'min al-fiḍḍat al-anṣāf al-judūd', which points to the Mamlūkī silver 'half' coin of al-Muʾayyad Shaykh and suggests that this letter is dated no earlier than 1415 CE, as this was the year when the ruler imposed the 'half' as the basic silver coin.

Might have reused a state document, probably a fiscal receipt, because an ʿalama "al-ḥamdu li-llah ʿalāʾālāʾih" can be read on verso and it seems that the writer has left space around it.

Also exhorts his father to update him on the apartment and the broad shawl and an ambergris seal (?). Verso: letter from Levi aka Abu Sahl to his son Moshe suggesting to him a choice among four prospective brides, one of them a divorcee: the daughter of al-[...]abiyah, or the daughter of Hibah the glassmaker the in-law of 'Imran b. al-Marjani, or the woman who was divorced by Ibn al-Habbar (the ink seller), or the daughter of Abu Sa'd al-Levi. He also requests a bundle of firewood for 4 or 5 dirhems for the holiday (lines 11-14) and mentions that Moshe's mother has gone away to "you know where" (lines 3-5) and writes something about the broad shawl, perhaps that he already sent it on Friday (lines 15-16).
