He reports someone's testimony that she was 5 days old when al-Muʿaẓẓam died (likely al-Muʿaẓẓam ʿĪsā, who died in 1227 CE); her paternal uncle swears to this. They summoned the mother of Bayān the landlord, who says something about 13 years and al-Malik al-Nāṣir. The addressee is asked to make up his mind and inform the Nagid.

The first row consists of nearly all the same items as the second row, except that there are quantities in the first row, and the first row also includes ṭaḥīna. […] The ingredients are as follows: -sumac (summāq) -lemon juice (mā laymū) -a head (raʾs; this is slightly puzzling because in the first row, "head" is listed as a measurement for garlic, but here "head" and "garlic" are separated by "walnut") -walnut (jawz) -garlic (thawm) -salt-cured fish (ṣaḥna) -preserved lemon (called laymūna mamlūḥa in this row and laymūna māliḥa in the row above) On verso there is a notation in Arabic script and Greek/Coptic numerals of an amount owed (al-bāqī), and then in Judaeo-Arabic, "Abū l-Bahāʾ from (New) Cairo."

T-S AS 183.155 goes on to refer to documents or signatures (khaṭṭ) of Fatḥ(?) al-Simsār and Abū l-Ḥasan. The latter may be followed by the phrase "bi-ghayr ʿalāma," "without a registration mark." The writer, a physician, even expresses the expectation that the Emperor might take Aleppo and Damascus as well and already placed an order for medical books which would be looted there from the homes of his colleagues." […] Goitein suggests that he traveled initially with the Fatimid navy, as he lists letters he sent in previous years from the army camp at Jaffa, from Rhodes, and from the island of Chios, which were occupied by the Venetian navy in 1224. The physician also stayed in Constantinople before settling in Seleucia and marring a woman with a Greek name (Korasi). In the introduction to her edition, Jane Hathaway notes: "This is an Arabic court case summary, dated Shawwāl 1059/October 1649, documenting a purchase of sugar by a Jewish official from a Muslim sub-provincial tax farmer and the tax farmer’s delivery of the sugar, along with repayment of a debt to the official.... The document comes from the sharīʿa court at Bāb al-Kharq/Bāb al-Saʿāda, located west of Bāb Zuwayla, the southern gate of the original Fatimid city of Cairo.... […] According to the court record, Yūsuf has sold a large quantity (130 qinṭārs) of sugar to the Jewish muʿallim Maṣliḥ (the Arabic form of Matsliʾaḥ, מצליח) son of ‘Binyāmīl’ (presumably really Binyāmīn), the ṣarrāf, or banker, to the dīwān al-ʿālī, referring to the governor’s council." Netanel ha-Levi, in Alexandria. In Judaeo-Arabic. Dating: 1139 CE. This fragment contains three different drafts of letters. […] He blames this on his wretched condition in the wake of his illnesses (v16–18) and the tribulations of his four-year journey to the Maghrib and to al-Andalus. In particular, he has been shaken by the deaths of his brother and the death of 'our diadem and crown and master and head' (v19–21); Goitein concludes that the references are to Ḥalfon's brother ʿEli and to the head of the Yeshiva, Maṣliah Gaon. Presumably, Ḥalfon wrote these drafts during the period he spent in Alexandria upon his return from the West to Egypt in April 1139 CE.

A woman whose name is not preserved bequeaths a house, part of which she owns, to another woman, Sitt al-Dar bt. Shaʾul, probably her daughter (or housekeeper?). […] Another part of the duwayra (small compound) was owned by al-ʿaniyim (the poor), i.e. by the qodesh. To prevent any loss to the qodesh, the recipient of the estate was forbidden to sell it to non-Jews or to build an additional floor over it. In case she sold it, the same restrictions would have to be applied to the purchaser. It is also stated that Sitt al-Dār will serve and care for her benefactor until her benefactor's death.

This letter/petition opens with a discussion of the least worthy among the patriarchs (the first line seems to be a reference to howAbraham, called Sayyid al-Kawnayn (! this is typically an epithet of Muḥammad), prayed for intercession on behalf of Lot, "the least worthy of the Avot; there is then mention of Esau); then mentions the superhuman humility of Moses especially at the time of Korah's rebellion. […] tarḥīm) for a deceased woman (al-marḥūma). If the addressee doesn't go along with the request, the sender threatens to harass him by sending 20 nobles and 20 commoners his way. He also mentions "the people of Cairo and Fustat." (Identification of the scribe kindly provided by Amir Ashur.)
