Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Two fragments of a mercantileletter from Marwan b. Ibrāhīm al-Maghribi, unknown location, to Yosef b. […] The Arabic-script address gives the addressee as Abū Ibrāh[īm] Isḥāq "al-Maghāriba" (this last word may mean that it should be delivered to the neighborhood of the Maghribīs in Raqqa). The Judaeo-Arabic hand and orthography are unusual, reminiscent of the early Judaeo-Arabic papyri (e.g., PER H 33 (PGPID 6127)). The lettermentions a person in Raqqa named Ḥasan b. Shelomo several times.

  3. 3753Legal documentJRL A 738

Legal document. Testimony in court, between brothers Moshe Sofer, Yisḥaq Sofer aka Maqaṣīs, and some of their family members. The paleography supports a dating estimate of 17th- or 18th-century. The legal proceedings relate to the pair's involvement in the "ṣarflık trade" (מלאכת הצרפליך) mentioned in line 2. The brother's business relations help explain Yiṣḥaq's sobriquet Maqaṣīs, meaning "clipped coins" (which was one of the services that ṣarrāfs provided).
