Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

  5. 7955LetterT-S AS 155.321

Verso: unusual note that does not seem to be a classic address; it is written vertically and 90 degrees to the direction of the text on the other side, which suggests it was written after the fragment was already torn. It reads, "Letters from [my? your?] brother from Yemen, to be sent to Sicily/Palermo along with my letter, God willing." Maybe the letter on recto was torn to create scrap paper, and this note was then enclosed along with a bundle of letters to be forwarded from Yemen to Sicily via Egypt.

(It's possible that these are two or three distinct records rather than one long one.) See also T-S 18J2.5 (PGPID 3528), involving the same Ghālib and Bārra.

  8. 7958Paraliterary textT-S K2.51

The focus on Persia in this text and its mention of a king seem to suggest a pre-Islamic date, perhaps originally a non-Jewish context, and the mention of Jews may be a later insertion. There are also many parallels to Akkadian astrology. Empty brackets indicate lacunae in the manuscript. (Information from Posen Library) Alt. "They were alsoallowed to send letters out of prison, some of which we still have, and since in one such letter a complaint is made against a particularly wicked jailer who cursed and beat the writer without reason, we may assume that in some places at least the authorities in charge did not tolerate excesive cruelty."

Dating: 16th century, as the largest portion concerns the expenses of Moshe לחמית traveling to Jerusalem (taraqqi al-quds); the same man appears in Moss. IV,93, which dates to ~1557 CE. […] The purchases in Gaza include firewood, shīrīn (=sweets?), fodder (ʿalīq), laundry straw, chickens, rice, eggs, coffee. The purchases in Ramla include all the same and more. The tables on verso are clearly written but inscrutable—perhaps this is an accounting shorthand.
