  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Letter from Binyām (Binyamin) of Rosetta, probably in Alexandria, to Abū Saʿīd the gallnut merchant, in Fustat. […] Goods named in this letter include afsantīn (wormwood); kundus (baby's breath); zunjufr (cinnabar); sunbul (spikenard); quṣṭ (=qusṭ, alecost or costus); martak (litharge); salaqūn (red lead); jullanār (pomegranate blossom); qiṭna or qaṭina (a cryptic term which may simply be a derivative of cotton, but in this form means 'omasum' according to the dictionaries); אבר (either abār, meaning lead, or ibar, meaning "needles"); khaskhāsh abyaḍ (white poppy); 1000 dūdīyya li-l-misk (Goitein suggests astringent kermes worms); qurashiyya (Goitein suggests "odoriferous claws"; Lisān al-ʿArab says it is a type of wheat); and asārūn (asarabacca), which [in Rosetta, probably] is going for 1 dinar, due to demand from the Andalusians.

Goitein/Friedman suggest that the sender's intent is to take the corals east to Aden or al-Hind, where they sold for higher prices. The sender urgently requests the recipient's help and also asks him to form a partnership with a merchant from Córdoba who had spent the winter in al-Mahdiyya. […] Remarkable is the piece of information regarding the entire amount of merchandise that has arrived in ʿAydhāb after the roads were reopened and merchants began receiving "governmental prescripts" (sijillāt al-sulṭān): 9,000/13,000 bales of goods. Among these merchants was Labdī with a shipment of 80 bales of lac packed in Nahrawara (Gujarat), 50 bales of pepper and other merchandise.

A part of a decree from the court of the Fātimid Caliph al-Ẓāhir, protecting the rights of the Qaraite communities in Palestine against Rabbanite encroachment, 1034 CE. […] The first section of the extant decree gives both communities (Rabbanites and Qaraites) permission to act according to their customs, and explicitly allows Qaraites to keep their customs in their synagogues without interference. The second section of the decree is addressed to amīr al-juyūsh, the governor of Syria and Palestine (who at the time was Anūshtekīn al-Duzbarī), to enforce this decree.

The list is titled "ב׳׳ה בצט נוטת די אלייות דיל ק׳׳ק נגב..סנת" which yields: "... note of āliyyot (sic) of the Q[ahal] Q[adosh]..." The erratic spelling of āliyyot (with א rather than ע and with יי) is then repeated at the opening of most of the individual entries in the singular form אליית, aliyyat. […] Other entries relate to "aliyyot" for the holiday "Sūqōt (sic)" (סוקות) and in a few instances the scribe notes that contributions were made "by me" (por mi) or a certain "David." One entry on the left side of the document mentions "the āliyya of the Q[ahal] Q[adosh] Porṭegezes (sic)," probably a reference to the Portuguese Congregation of early modern Cairo.

Letter from a Qaraite, in Jerusalem, to al-Shaykh al-Rashīd Hārūn Ibn Saghīr, in Cairo. […] He clarifies that the conflict is about Ibrāhīm and Sulaymān who both insist on marrying Rivqa who 'belongs to' (? btāʿ) al-Shaykh al-Najīb Shimʿon. They had decided to marry her to Avraham, but she insisted that she would only marry Sulaymān, and Avraham said that he would kill someone if he didn't get to marry her. They feared something ('al-amākin' = the places?) and prevented her from entering either Sulaymān's or Avraham's house or from leaving her own house without a female escort.

Yūsuf claims that Da’ūd and Ṣedaqa, sons of Ṣemaḥ b. Da’ūd al-Raqqī, have withheld profits from a partnership in a store. The brothers were also involved in long distance trading on behalf of the partnership. Yaʿqūb himself seems to have contributed the sum total of the partnership capital, amounting to four thousand dinars, which yielded a one time payment of ten dinars to Yaʿqūb and a single dinar each week, of which Yaʿqūb would receive half and the brothers the other half. Yaʿqūb also received 30 dinars each month to satisfy a debt on the store.

Maḍmūn sending 30 dinars with Abū l-ʿAlāʾ and urging the sender to come to Yemen after hearing of his misfortune, and the matter of Abū ʿImrān converting to Islam and divorcing his wife ("al-ṣaghīra," "the little one").
