Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

According to Goitein, the letter was dictated to Ibn Yijū many years before he traveled east, even though his wife and brother-in-law were converts and the lettermentions both India and Yemen as places to which copies of the letter should be sent. See Goitein, Med. Soc., 2:305 (592, n. 29), on the puzzling nature of this text; Friedman connects it speculatively with "the Norman invasion of the East, which began in 1153."

The sender is a Qaraite (among other indications, he calls the Rabbanites "the damned bastards the sons of the Mishna"). The letter resembles many of the communal Qaraite letters found in the Firkovich collection. The letter contains a detailed description of a legal case, apparently about someone seeking to convert away from Judaism. […] There are several lines praising God for His goodness and calling down curses on enemies and schemers and anyone who has pity on a Rabbanite—"may he taste his medicine." The letter concludes with various greetings.

Letter in Judaeo-Arabic. Dating: probably early 13th century. The writer complains that the Rayyis does not trust him to deliver letters for him, thus he gave letters to R. Yūsuf to deliver, who then lost them. […] The story is confusing and would likely be clarified by the missing part of the letter. An Abū Zikrī is mentioned in the margin.
