Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

When the letter switches to Arabic script, it is to discuss a matter concerning some enemies of the writer and addressee. Meira Polliack, "Dual Script Mixed Code Literary Sources from the Cairo Genizah," Intellectual History of the Islamicate World 7 (2019): 340-41 contains a careless edition of the Arabic and errors in the Judaeo-Arabic, the readings in PGP edition are preferable.

It seems that Shemarya ha-Kohen was granted the right to be sole butcher and another man entered into a legal agreement and swore an oath that he would not butcher — but now he has been witnessed violating that oath. The fact that there is a legal document on the back as well may suggest this was a page from a court notebook. Probably related: ENA NS I.81 (PGPID 11334), Moss. VII,210 (PGPID 27096), and/or Bodl.

The specific relationships are not entirely clear. She seems to use masculine verb endings when addressing each one of the two; she opens with "salām allāh taʿālā ʿalā a[l]-ṣihr(?) al-ʿazīz wa-ʿalā al-bint al-ʿazīza Esther min ummik" and there is no clear alternative to eading ṣihr, which can mean son-in-law as well as brother-in-law; but she also writes "greet your mother-in-law" (with masculine verb ending), a statement that has to be addressed to her own child.

The first and last line read: "O Rabbi David, the Jews are suffering in your absence, our friends are stricken and our enemies are gloating." At the bottom of fol. 1r, more of the story emerges: the speakers repent of having wronged Rabbi David (niḥnā qad asaynā fī ḥaqqak) and mourn that those who have replaced him in leading prayers and giving the sermon are no match for him. It is tempting to connect this poem to the deposition and later reinstatement of David I Maimonides (cf. the English edition of Goitein and Friedman, India Traders, pp.115–16 and BL Or. 5549.4).

It may be a kind of debate poem, as there is "wa-radda" and "man radda" in the refrain before the subsequent stanza. Some of the stanzas are extremely similar to each other, except that the orthography differs. This entire interpretation is tentative, because the handwriting is dreadful and the orthography even worse.
