  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Some of the entries where prices are mentioned also reference types of coinage. On the upper right of the verso, line 2, the word "בונדוק / bunduk" appears which is in all likelihood a quantity of gold Venetian ducats. […] The word Istanbulī is also used in various accounts but its exact numismatic meaning is unclear. Based on the structure of this bifolium and the small tears along the inner spine, it may originate from a broader private ledger.

Dating: Perhaps Mamluk-era; the dates are given, but are faded and difficult to read. Recto and verso contain two distinct (but related) sections, in different handwriting and with different layouts. It is possible that each of these is a supplement to an earlier document, since they seem abbreviated and refer, e.g., to "al-Muʿallim ʿAbd al-Karīm al-madhkūr bāṭinuhu." […] There is a filing note in Judaeo-Arabic on the folded (empty) section of the letter: "[...] between me and ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Ḥulwānī(??)... regarding Yūsuf." A different version of this poem is cited several hundred years later by al-Itlīdī (17th c.) (https://shamela.ws/book/408/157): وصل الكتاب فلا عدمت أناملاً عنيت به حتى تضوع طيبا ففضضته وقرأته، فوجدته لخفي أوجاع القلوب طبيبا فكأن موسى قد أعيد لأمه أو ثوب يوسف قد أتى يعقوبا — this verse is very close to the second verse in the Geniza letter: "(Your letter arriving) was as if Moses had been returned to his mother, or the garment of Joseph to Jacob." Apart from the poem, none of the substance of the letter is preserved, except for the name al-shaykh Abū l-Faḍāʾil in the margin.
