Two folios from a juridical legal text on the ādāb al-quḍāt. The preserved text discusses the binding nature of testimony and the often-quoted phrase, "to choose to be a judge is like impaling oneself with a knife." There is also a note to the top corner of the first fragment, perhaps a tamlīk (ownership) note that reads: "نسخة عبد الحليم بن عبد العقل ابو لنون يعقوب الحنبلي". The note is dated to the year 548 H. The scribal hand can also be dated to the 12th century based on paleography.

Ḥayyim ha-Kohen (Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAllūn b. Yaʿīsh). Opens with a verse of Arabic poetry on separation attributed to al-Tihāmī (the original: فإن تكن الأيام فرقن بيننا فمن ذا الذي من ريبهن سليم). This is a letter of recommendation for the bearer, who was well-off (min ahl al-satr) but who has fallen victim to the depredations of fate, and who is worthier than others to receive charity. The writer sends regards to the addressee's son Abū Kathīr, also a parnas.

The writer was amazed to learn of Abū Isḥāq's worry/fear (ḍuʿf al-qalb) and urges him not to worry so much ("the heart of a man should not be weak"). "Even if אהל אלתקלין all gathered together, they could not do except what God wills." Goitein's note card suggests that this might refer to demons, probably a deduction from context. It might also be "ahl al-thaqalayn," i.e., the people of the two weights (the Qur'ān and the family of Muḥammad), meaning Muslims.

Cuts off right before the request: there arrived from the official who imprisoned them three sealed documents (khawātim khātim min qabl Munajjat al-Dawla) ... possibly to do with the jizya, a pretext for imprisoning them for moral offenses (?), suggesting that the trader was conspicuous and respectable, or his moral infractions might not have drawn attention. See also T-S NS J286, in which a man travels from Ceuta to Bijāya, Algeria, where the sāḥib al-Bijāya asks him how is related to a woman who is with him. (There is a ṣāḥib al-shūrṭa in ENA 3901.5, too.) The traveler (never described as a Maghribi trader, but a man from the Maghrib) claims she is his wife, but he has no kitāb to prove this.

Dated: 25 Nisan 1443 Seleucid = 12 April 1132 CE, under the authority of the Gaʾon Maṣliaḥ ha-Kohen. The Alexandrian ʿIwāḍ b. Menashshe brings to the court a document in the hand of the cantor Ṣadaqa ha-Levi Ibn Nufayʿ concerning his divorce from Hilāla bt. Yeshuʿa. He also brings as witnesses Shabbat b. Maḥfūẓ al-Bannāʾ (the builder) and Abū l-Khayr Ibn al-Iskandarānī who testify to the authenticity of the signatures on the document and the fact that Hilāla has received her geṭ from ʿIwāḍ. ʿIwāḍ then engages Sitt al-Khawāt bt. Eliyya the divorcee of Yehuda b. Menashshe ha-Levi.

Court proceedings in the case of al-Wuhsha (or al-Wahsha) against Yosef al-Lebdī. Wuhsha's representative, Moshe b. Yeshuaʿ, sues al-Lebdī for her share of 300 dīnārs ("more or less") realized from the investment of Wuhsha's brother, Abū Naṣr, in al-Lebdī's merchandise, sold or unsold. […] The total value of the investment was 800 dīnārs. Al-Lebdī argued that the 300 dīnārs had nothing to do with that partnership, but he was prepared to include them if al-Wuḥsha would do the same, reciprocally, with the 22 bales of lac that her representative claimed were part of a separate deal.

[…] The purpose of this document is to bring Mufaḍḍal into the relationship between Abū al-‘Alā and his father; no qinyan between the father and son is recorded here. […] The document may have been written for Mufaḍḍal and to record his investment (100 dinars) and the split of profits or losses due to him.The sole preserved signatory, the judge Yehiel b. Eliakim of Aleppo, is known to have signed other documents with Abraham Maimonides.

Yeshuʿa he-ʿAni and Abū l-ʿAlāʾ Efrayim b. Yefet appear before the court. Abū l-ʿAlāʾ has heard that Mevasser plans to temporarily close his moneychanging shop in the perfumers' square in Fustat, next to the shop of Abū l-Ḥusayn al-Ḥalabī al-Ṣayrafī, for a period of time in order to take care of other affairs. Abū l-ʿAlāʾ asked to rent it from him, but Mevasser feared that Abū l-ʿAlāʾ would refuse to vacate the shop and return it to him upon his return. Therefore Abū l-ʿAlāʾ here declares that he will vacate the shop at the appropriate time and not exceed his lease and takes an oath to this effect.
