  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

The case is that of two brothers who inherit 3.5 shares in a property from their third brother, but upon selling their shares, they learn that the deceased brother had already sold 1 share in the property, so that each brother owned 0.5 less share than he thought he did. The case is potentially connected to the document on the recto (PGPID 5335), a partnership agreement between two brothers, Abū al-Faḍl and Abū al-Riḍā Yosef b. Berakhot, who have inherited a sugar factory from their father and purchased the remainder from their brothers. The partnership agreement also references "Arabic documents" that allegedly detail the nature of the inheritance/purchase, as well as the dimensions of the property.

Letter from an unnamed Fatimid official in Alexandria to Najīb al-Dawla. Dating: second half of the eleventh century. 36 lines preserved, written in an elegant chancery hand with very wide line-spacing. […] The author writes to report to Najīb al-Dawla on his activities in the delta and in a village called Tarūja, which is southeast of Alexandria. […] He was close with Sahl b. al-Faḍlal-Tustarī, a muʿtazilī philosopher-theologian who was a government administrator in Jerusalem in the 1090s under the Seljuks; but the letter reflects an Egyptian Fatimid context, not a Syrian Seljuk one, so al-Tustarī is unlikely to be its author, unless he had an otherwise unattested appointment in Egypt before his appointment in Jerusalem.

Dated: Last decade of Iyyar 1431 Seleucid, which is 1120 CE. In which Abū l-Faḍāʾil leases half of a house for a monthly rent of 7 qīrāṭs of gold from ʿAyn al-Qurrah sitt al-Milāḥ, the daughter of the deceased Abū l-Faḍl Ibn al-Qaṭāʾif. Sitt al-Milāḥ is his sister-in-law, as he is married to Sitt al-Gharb, the other daughter of Abū l-Faḍl Ibn al-Qaṭāʾif, as is described in UPenn E 16510 (PGPID 8962) which was written in the same days - last ten days of Iyyar 1431 Sel. An agent, Abū l-Ḥasan ʿEli ha-Kohen, is acting in the name of sitt al-Milāḥ. A ‘property chain’ was involved, in that the contract specifies that Abū l-Faḍāʾil will not be able to move into his accommodation until the new house of sitt al-Milāḥ is ready (it is currently being built).

Letter from Abū l-Faḍl and his mother, perhaps in Fustat, to his father Abū Naṣr, in Asyūṭ. […] It seems that Abū Naṣr had deposited some gold with a certain Abū l-Faḍl (a different person than the son who wrote this letter) in Alexandria "for the orphan girl." But the family has heard no news of this gold and fears it is lost, because Abū l-Faḍl's wife has died and Abū l-Faḍl himself is very sick (ʿalā khuṭṭa) (last lines of right margin, continuing into the upper margin).
