Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

In this context it seems unlikely that "granada" meant "English pomegranate" or "English hand grenade[!]"[…] Line 9 clearly referencess a shipping vessel in the entry "por nolo di djerma." The latter term "djerma" refers to a class of "small flat-boats that allowed the transport of cargo... to the mouth of the Nile" before goods were transferred onto bigger sea-borne vessels.

  26. 526מכתבBodl. MS heb. c 28/31

During his long stay in Alexandria his body and soul never enjoyed full health, but he was also unable to bring himself to go up to Cairo: how could he visit the place vacated by his brother? Family and friends came down to Alexandria to induce him to return home, but he did not find in himself nahḍa, energy, to do so. For this reason, he was also not in a position to send to his friends in Spain (mostly physicians) the pharmaceutical plants promised, for these were to be had only in the capital (the terminal of the India trade), not in the Mediterranean port.
