Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

  14. 14LetterCUL Or.1081 2.49

Sent from Yiṣḥaq Ben-Naʿim, in Safed, to Nissim Molkho in Cairo. Yiṣḥaq explains the terrible conditions that have prevailed in Safed since the Jewish community was attacked on Shabbat ha-Gadol, the final Shabbat before Passover, during the French occupation of the city– "in the time of the Christians" (l. 15). When Ottoman forces sought to defeat the French in Safed, their forces "did not return to formations and colors" (l. 16) and sacked the city. Yiṣḥaq explains that Ottoman soldiers killed ten Jews during the siege and after the French left Safed, its residents have been "shirtless" (ll. 21-22).
