Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

This fragment also contains the end of the letter from ENA 2634.2 (dated: 7 Av, 5656 AM, which is 1896 CE). […] The writer is a maker of amulets and segulot who has gone at least partially blind. He complains about his tremendous expenses paying for the scribe who had to repeat the amuletic drawing "50 times" and paying for a postal delivery (הפוסטה), because he initially trusted Agha Baba Tehrani to deliver the letters and amulets, but that man absconded and failed him, leaving no option but to use the post.

Karaite betrothal document. Date: 26 Adar 5487 AM (1727 CE). Location: Cairo. The previously married bride is Najma bt. […] The term בריח literally means "bolt" or "bar" in Hebrew (Jastrow, 193; Strong, H1280) but in this context served as a numismatic label for Ottoman gold zingirli coins. The initial sum of 11 gold b'riaḥīm (בריחים) + 75 medin indicates the full value of the muqdam/meʾuḥar rather than their component sums. […] The exchange rate given for the b'riaḥ/בריח thus directly corresponds with that of the Ottoman zingirli in early eighteenth-century Cairo (Raymond, Artisans et Comerçants, Vol. I, 30-31). MCD.
