Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Accounts in Judaeo-Arabic listing a variety of individuals with honorific Ottoman titles. In the upper right corner of the recto the account heading reads "Diwan ʿĀlī_[?]" = perhaps the "Governor's Court" in Cairo. Another reference to the provincial administration in Egypt appears in one of entries just below the heading "from the hand of the Kāshif" (a leading official within the local tax administration).

Accounts in Judaeo-Arabic in a unique hand. The heading includes a date with the months Shaʿbān and Tūt, but its exact meaning is unclear (it may be related to the Ottoman fiscal calendar). Below the heading the unit of volume "ardab" or "irdab" appears and the first entry is entitled "אלמביע" indicating a sale of the accompanying items (whose quantity, weight, or prices are indicated in alphanumerical figures). For more information on this unit of volume, see Goitein's brief explanation (Goitein, Mediterranean Society I, 361) though it is crucial to note that this unit persisted beyond the medieval period and in Ottoman-era sources is often transliterated as "ardab" yet it indicates a significantly higher volume of liters per ardab (White, Climate of Rebellion, xv). The same accounting format appears on the document's verso. MCD.
