The last column mentions the year, which is 1238 in all columns. The word ماهبة also appears on the heading. Verso also contains a few names with the sum of calculations towards the end. The name of Moses "سيدنا موسى عليه السلام" also appears a couple of times. The document could be a draft as years stop being written after a point on recto and there is an absence of a signature or seal which is a typical feature of Ottoman-era documents.

Letter from Jalāl al-Dawla (or at least a person from the family of Shelomo b. Yishai the Nasi), written during an epidemic, and mentioning the Nagid [Avraham Maimonides] as being ill and also mentioning his (father?)-in-law the judge R. […] The people are in terrible distress, too preoccupied to care for each other--let alone for a stranger." Jalāl al-Dawla also provides an update on his own diarrhea (v7–8): it is intermixed with white phlegm, coiled/twisted (multaff), and it burns when it comes out (yaldhaʿu waqta majī’ihi).

On verso, one page was reused for a Judaeo-Arabic list written at 180 degrees in a crude hand, mentioning names such as Bū l-ʿAlāʾ, Baqāʾ b. […] He complains about Ḥalfon’s plan to travel to Damascus by land rather than by ship from Alexandria because Saʿdān expected them to meet there, and so Ḥalfon would pay all or part of the debt that Ḥalfon's brother Abū ʿAlī Yeḥezqel owed to Saʿdān. Ḥalfon had already described to Saʿdān the difficult illness of Yeḥezqel.

Ḥananya ha-Nagid, between Abū al-Faraj al-Musta‘mil b. Shelomo and Hillel b. Sālim. Abū al-Faraj gives Hillel 100 dirhams as an absolute debt and the latter agrees to work until the amount is repaid. If Hillel wishes to leave this employment, he must pay the entire balance of the debt. It seems that Abū al-Faraj is also to pay Hillel a wage, though the amount is unspecified.

Verso: Letter in Arabic script to an unknown recipient from ʿAlī Efendi, the commander of Damietta's janissary garrison. […] In the introduction to her edition, Jane Hathaway notes: "The verso is a letter, in Arabic, dated Dhū’l-Qaʿda 1119/late January–early February 1708, from the commander (serdār) of the local Janissary garrison to a recipient whose name has been cut off along with the top of the document.... ʿAlī’s letter alludes to a dispute between one Muʿallim Mūsā, certainly the Jewish amīn who supervised Damietta’s customs on behalf of the holder of the customs tax farm, and ‘the Christian’ (al-Naṣrānī), along with ‘the people’ (al-nās), presumably referring to his associates, who may well be fellow Christians.... This dispute concerns nets (Arabic, shabābik), no doubt fishing nets, that the Christian and his allies owe to Muʿallim Mūsā." (Hathaway, Ottoman-Era Documents from the Cairo Genizah, 99, 101-102)

Hoshaʿna, is mentioned on leaf 4v, since he was also one of the prisoners. Leaf 1 of the codex contains morning benedictions and is in a different hand to the other leaves. Its vocalisation has also been added secondarily. Leaf 2 should come between leaves 6 and 7. There are leaves missing between leaves 3 and 4 and possibly also between 5 and 6. Netanel, in Qalyūb, to his brother Ḥalfon b. Netanel, in Alexandria. The left side of the letter and the top and bottom are cut off. […] He was about to buy an inferior item from someone who, however, had just increased his price by 1.5 dīnārs; Yeḥezqel thought Ḥalfon could buy this item anyway in Alexandria. The textile artisans/merchants (al-bazzāzīn) said that the textile he sought could only be found in Cairo. The letter also mentions some tasks that Yeḥezqel is carrying out on behalf of Abū Iṣḥaq.

Therefore, exactly as one would beg money for food, one should do so, if necessary, in order to pay rent. 2) The ban will also operate also on anyone who does not accept the amount of the rent as established by three Jews, the muqawwimin. 3) The lessee is obliged to present his deeds of lease whenever asked to do so in the name of the waqf. 4) The ban will also be applied to anybody making use of a Muslim's intervention in order to obtain a lodging in the houses of the qodesh or a reduction of rent imposed on him. […] Abū l-Ḥusayn Yaḥyā ha-Kohen (known as al-Ḥalabī al-Ṣayrafī, i.e. the Aleppan banker) died penniless and as his widow is still nursing their baby she is unable to work. She asks the community judges to give her a monthly allowance (20 dirhams) while she is nursing and raising her daughter.
