  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

The one on the left says "let it be copied in the Dīwān al-Mufrad lil-Iqṭāʿāt al-Murtajiʿa in shāʾa llāh." […] Al-Ḥakīm established an office called dīwān al-mufrad for the administration of estates, but later came to be known as dīwān al-murtajʿā; see Michael Brett, Fatimid Empire (Edinburgh:2017), 177. Apparently, Barqūq also established Dīwān al-Mufrad in either 1382 or 1395 CE; see Daisuke Igarashi, "The Establishment and Development of al-Dīwān al-Mufrad: Its Background and Implications," Mamluk Studies Review 10 (2006), 117–40.

Detailed business and personal letter from Alexandria to Fustat. The letter narrates the difficult situation in Alexandria during a siege, probably al-Afdal's siege of 1094, when Nizar took refuge in Alexandria after the death of the caliph al-Mustansir. […] Frenkel suggests that the writer describes an epidemic, which is known from other letters, but here there seems to be no sign of an epidemic (the reading of the last word of line 7 as al-nās is tentative and does not completely fit the context). He reports that no pepper, cinnamon or ginger were available in Alexandria, and asks the recipient to keep these commodities for the Byzantines, saying that all Byzantines are set to leave for Fustat as soon as two ships from Constantinople arrive.

The addressee mentioned on verso begins with "ḥaḍra mawlāya al-Shaykh al-Ajal Abī al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm". The letter is most probably dated to ~1158, when both Almeria (in 1157) and Tripoli (in 1158) had been retaken by the Almohads. During these developments, al-Mahdiyya was still under Norman rule, so it makes sense that the ship of the Ṣāhib al-Mahdiyya and the ship of al-Rūm (Byzantines) were traveling together as mentioned in the letter.
