    On verso, they explain that "the Rayyis is a captive in the house, and we are surrounded/besieged, we are distressed and there is no deliverance, may God deliver you (pl.). The latest report is that the decree (al-manshūr) is false and counterfeit (zūr wa-buhtān), and the decrees (al-sijillāt) are not for him(?)." (On the decree-terms "sijill" and "manshūr" and the relationship between them, see Rustow, "A petition to a woman at the Fatimid court," p. 9 note 25, and Rustow, Lost Archive, p. 267 note 55.) The sender swears by the Ten Commandments (ووحق العشر كلمات) and thanks God and the amīr Ḥusām al-Dawla, for without their benefactions, al-ʿAmmānī(?)

    The family is in financial straits and has had to sell household furnishings and lease the upper floor in order to pay the physician and buy medicine and two chickens every day. (Information from Med Soc III, 194, where there is also a translation.) "When a boy writing to his father abroad sends regards from his mother, grandmother, maternal aunts, the widow of a paternal uncle, and the maidservant, and adds, ‘The travel of Grandpa coincided with yours so that we have become like orphans," one gets the impression that all the persons mentioned formed one household.’”

    This letter must have been written at a time when Ascalon, Palestine, was in the hands of the Crusaders (1153–1187) and a Frank from Nablus could freely visit there. Three points are remarkable in this story: 1.
