Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

The hand seems to be identical with that of ENA 2575.7–8, a beautiful letter reporting the sinking of a ship in the Red Sea, dating probably from the 14th century or later based on the mention of the port city of al-Tur, which rose to prominence after the decline of al-Quṣayr.

He was anxious not to have received word from Yosef for a long time, but just now encountered a Maghribi who came from the West on the same boat as Yosef, and showed Avraham some letters he brought from Yosef. […] He especially sends his congratulations to Nahray on recovering from the illness that he contracted in Barqa. Here, at the end of the letter (v15–19), Avraham recounts that he was desperately ill, bedbound for one month in Ramla and for even longer in Jerusalem, but he recovered, barukh gomel le-ḥayavim ṭovot. […] Gil seems mistaken in reading this as an idiom for "let no one be envious of us," because it is a common trope in Geniza narratives of critical illness to emphasize how everyone had despaired.)

Particularly noteworthy is this: payment is made not at the end of the year of lease, as was Muslim (and Jewish) law, and not in installments, as was also customary, but in one sum, in the eighth month after its inception. […] "castle": qaṣr, which goes ultimately back to the smae Latin word as English "castle," designates also a primitive agricultural building: see Grohmann, APEL I, no. 72, pp. 268, 270. Accounts in Judaeo-Arabic and Hebrew dealing with funds from a wide variety of Ottoman tax farm districts (iltizām) and their respective tax farmers (multazim). Dated in multiple entries, possibly as Rajab 1089 AH: אפ׳׳ט, with the aleph marking 1000 (1678 CE). […] The scribal hands are distinct enough from the state accounts that they may be of no relation and were probably recorded once the bifolio became scrap paper. The scribe who recorded these accounts likely held a post within the Ottoman fiscal administration of Egypt given the extent of their knowledge of tax farm funds throughout the entire province. Many members of the imperial administration in Egypt are mentioned as well as their corresponding rank/titles and respective tax farm districts: -Muḥ[ammad]/Maḥ[mūd] ibn Sīnān müteferriqa of the Diwān Miṣr (Governor's Court of Cairo), kāshif and multazim of the district Baʿd Jawāzī(?)

Despite the fame of his poems, ʿĀşık ʿÖmer’s birthdate and provenance are not entirely certain. Various scholars over the past century or so have estimated his birth year as either ca. 1029 AH/1620 CE or ca. 1061 AH/1651 CE, although the earlier date seems to be more widely accepted today (Karasoy and Yavuz 2015, 26, cf. 18, 800; Çavdar 2022, 502). […] In this document, the scribe, possibly Yaḥyā Çavuş himself, has reproduced what purport to be two of ʿĀşık ʿÖmer’s hece poems, both slight variations on the murabbaʿ, or ‘square’, poem comprising multiple quatrains ending in the same word; each example contains four such quatrains. In the first poem, every quatrain ends in the suffix –yuz (‘we are’). In the second poem, each quatrain ends in şimden gerü (‘ever after’ or ‘forevermore’).
