  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Fragment of a mercantileletter in Arabic script. Relatively large (the bottom 22 lines are preserved + 4 lines in the margin + remnants of the address on verso) but poorly conserved, and the first 11 lines are difficult to read. […] Ḥasan, and the document dates to 1136–39 or 1145–49 CE; see PGPID 5408 for further discussion. In the letter, the sender explains that he has no need for a certain item and that the addressee also has no need for it; mentions commodities including betel nut, raisins, the unidentified DRKY (الدركي) from the ruler of Dahlak (al-ṣāḥib Dahlak), and other undeciphered items; mentions a sum of 60 Malikī dinars; the arrival of the Kārim convoy in Aden; a group of "stray merchants" (tujjār mutawwahīn) and their trading activities; an extremely high price for a commodity whose name is difficult to read (150 dinars a bahār); and the same issues discussed in ENA NS 48.2, including how the governor (al-mālik al-sayyid) Bilāl b. Jarīr bought up all of the DRKY for his own use, leaving none for the other merchants, and the economic setback (labṭa) this year.

Letter from Yefet b. Menashshe to his brother Abū l-Surūr Peraḥya b. Menashshe. In Judaeo-Arabic. This is a complete and well-preserved letter, which is rare in the Yefet corpus. Letter from Abū l-Riḍā, it seems in Fustat, to his wife's brother Meʾir, perhaps in Damīra or at least nearby in the Rīf. […] The entry provides clues that these were cloth merchants, in exclusionary clauses on the verso regarding clothing and here on the recto mentioning "ditas" merchandise that are left over from the group's business activities. This term can be found in the Kohen & Kohen-Gordon Ladino dictionary as "logo, insignia" but may have had a more generic meaning connected to cloth embroidery. For another appearance of the same term in a cloth merchant partnership from 1730 CE, see: AIU VII.D.49 (PGPID 30545).
