  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Letter from Eliyyahu ha-Kohen “Beit Din” b. Avraham from al-Raqqah to Ya’aqov he-Ḥaver b. Yosef, Aleppo, ca. 1030. The writer thanks the addressee for taking care of his son, Amram, while he visited Aleppo. Eliyyahu mentions his satisfaction from his status as a judge in three communities in his town (probably the Iraqis, Shamis, and Qaraites), from his acceptance by several heads of Yeshivas in Iraq and the Exilarch (Rosh ha-Gola), and from his good relationships with the Qaraite community and the town governor. (Information from Gil, Kingdom, Vol. 2, #73) VMR Summarized by Frenkel as follows: The letter is effusive in self-praise and relates the writer’s actions and feats as the leader of the al-Raqqa community. He recounts how he “revived the Torah of Moses” and how he “returned many who went astray to the straight path,” and described how he sought to educate both Rabbanites and Karaites, “who, under our authority, have joined the Rabbanites.”

Letter from a man to his 'brother' Abū l-Khayr and to his brother Manṣūr al-Dhabbāḥ, in Fustat. In Judaeo-Arabic, with the address in Arabic script. […] But all turned out well." The writer goes on to explain why he himself left his family: because no one in Fustat could properly treat his illness. He went to Ibn al-Dihqān (when still in Fustat?), who did not know whether his back was ʿāṭib or not.

Khalaf doesn’t request payment for his services, because the stationary merchant, unlike the traveling merchant, traded for partners outside his home port not in exchange for compensation, but on the basis of reciprocity. Almostall the proceeds were invested immediately in new transactions that had to be done in India. […] He gives prices in the coin of Aden, the Malikī dinar, corresponding to 24 qīrāṭs, while textiles are traded in units of kawragha (pl. kawārigh), which is a bundle of twenty thawb (pl. athwāb; the word means not only cloak, but the unit of fabric of the size needed to make one). Also relates to the transactions discussed in a letter from Halfon to Maḍmūn b. […] This cluster of documents also makes it possible to estimate how long Ḥalfon b.

Ṭoviyya b. Yefet ha-Levi and ʿAllūn b. Faraj testify that on the eve of Passover 1350 Seleucid (April 1039 CE), they were present in the house of Sulaymān b. […] Lieberman understands this document very differently, interpreting the term mufāwaḍa as meaning "partnership" rather than "argument" and speculating that Sulaymān may have been the senior partner in an unspecified business partnership with Ṭoviyya, ʿAllūn, and Khalaf. He suggests that Ṭoviyya and ʿAllūn demanded a payout from the partnership, to be distributed by Sulaymān, who refused, claiming that Ṭoviyya and ‘Allūn have received their final settlements, and that Khalaf is free from his obligations to them. […] In yet another handwriting, the document validates the signatures of Tuviyya and ‘Allūn in the permanent court in Fusṭāṭ some months after their initial testimony was recorded in the home of Sulaymān in Cairo.

The term המרבע is used throughout to describe the property, perhaps denoting a "square" family residential compound. The property also had an upper-story apartment. At the original time of writing in 1643 CE, Mordekhay רקאק was renting one property, and Shemuʾel Ibn Yaḥyā rented another from the Castro family's real estate holdings (for which the street itself was possibly named, l. 3). […] Yiṣḥaq stipulates that the properties cannot be pledged as marital wealth in any ketubba or as collateral for debts. The document also mentions Yiṣḥaq's sister Esther, widow of Yosef Saʿadya, noting that Yosef (Castro) was also the maternal nephew (בן בתו) of Yosef Saʿadya– which means that Yiṣḥaq and Yosef Saʿadya married each other's sister. […] This potential surname פטסו may be an alternate spelling of the one attested (פתסו) in AIU VII.D.55 (PGPID 30551).
