Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

[...] for the astronomical sum of 4,000 dinars. "Junuq" is a very rare word and seems to be the only plausble reading of גנק, but it may not be correct. It is also not clear how much of the paper is torn away from the right side of the letter (probably ~2 words per line), which means the 4,000 dinars may refer to something other than the גנק.

There is a trustworthiness clause and also a condition regarding the children of the husband from a previous marriage - probably they will be living in their home until they marry. The hand is almost certainly that of ʿImmanuel b. Yeḥiel. Another interesting feature is that the ketubba is not signed and then someone attached a piece of parchment with two signatures: Elʿazar b.

Writing exercises in which the student practiced Judaeo-Romance words and names on at least one occasion in both Hebrew and Arabic script: פארין בן שביליינה بارين بن شبيليينة (Paren ben Shbiliyina). Although the first part of the name is difficult to interpret the second component may be related to medieval orthographies for the city Sevilla in Andalusia. There is also a fragmented phrase in late medieval or early modern Latin-script that could be Italian or, perhaps, an Iberian Romance language (this is likely a different scribal).
