Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Letter in Judaeo-Arabic. Dating: Likely early 13th century. […] But Zekharya / Abū Zikrī isn't called "my brother," so then again maybe this isn't Shelomo. The letter concerns the purchase of a Torah scroll. The sender says his father won't let him go to Alexandria until something is sorted out. Mentions Tāj al-Dīn. On verso, the letter addresses al-ḥakīm al-ajall (maybe this is a switch to addressing Zekharya / Abū Zikrī, who was greeted at the bottom of recto) and instructs him not to let anyone see this letter (quoting Psalms 25:14).

"They were also allowed to send letters out of prison, some of which we still have, and since in one such letter a complaint is made against a particularly wicked jailer who cursed and beat the writer without reason, we may assume that in some places at least the authorities in charge did not tolerate excesive cruelty."
