Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

The author of the letter, who appears to work for this merchant, mentions his visit to Ṭanṭa in Egypt, where he offered prayers at the shrine of a local Ṣūfī saint Aḥmad al-Badawī (d.1276). […] He expresses his intention of traveling to the mediterranean sea and embarking on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Sayyīd Ibrāhim al-Desūqī (d. 1296) to observe his birth anniversary. Towards the end, he requests a letter from Muḥammad Effendī in the name of ʿUmar Aghā, the superintendent of the freights (al-Anwāl) of al-Maḥalla.

The first part of the letter (r1–17) includes lengthy apologies for failing to visit when he heard that his mother was sick. He was unable to come because of the expense of renting an animal, the danger of the journey, and because he was suffering from ophthalmia ('but now, thank God, I am better'). […] His wife is distressed on behalf of her mother-in-law's illness and wishes to come to visit. Goitein suggests that the key to why Surūr neglected to tell his mother or ask her permission prior to the marriage lies in his neglect to mention his wife's name or that she comes from a good family. […] He then gives "signs" to remind the Nagid of his case: how, when he visited Bilbays, he spoke with Surūr about the copy of a Bible belonging to Yaʿqūb the brother of the teacher; how the Nagid was involved in Surūr's divorce from his first wife; and how the Nagid went to see the head of police (wālī) of Bilbays, who directed him to the Qadi, who was not available.

The letter deals almost entirely with the troubles that befell Ḥalfon in Egypt upon his return the previous year from Spain. […] Because of the troubles that have overwhelmed him in Egypt, Ḥalfon regrets having left Spain at all where he had enjoyed the company of Yehuda ha-Levi; he wishes he had remained in Spain and then accompanied Yehuda ha-Levi on his journey eastward (verso, ll. 37–38; recto, l. 7). […] Additionally, the burden of the capitation tax on the Jews was increased, and benefits they had previously enjoyed were canceled (recto, l. 28). The Jews found comfort in the appointment of the Nagid Shemuʾel b.

[…] As though that were not enough: two sisters of those nephews lived in a house belonging to their family in Alexandria. The house was ill-omened (mayshūm), probably because someone had been killed there, or had died an unnatural or premature death. Shemuel Glick identifies Yiṣḥaq ʿOvadya as potentially the same individual who published אגרת דופי הזמן in Venice in 1598– full text available at: https://hebrewbooks.org/52557 (Information from Shmuel Glick's description/edition in FGP) NB: Minna Rozen lists the location of Siderokapısı as "some eight kilometers southeast of Thessaloniki," but this geographical association does not seem possible (Rozen, The Corvée of Operating the Mines in Siderokapısı, 37).

Accounts in a medieval-era scribal hand on recto. Although the verso was not reused in this case, the shelfmarks ENA 3264.1-6 are recycled pages of Arabic accounts that were cut into small sections for a student's notebook of alphabetical practice. […] Of the six consecutive shelfmarks, ENA 3264.3 is the only one that does not contain any Arabic text. The clearest evidence of sewing marks from the booklet's binding are visible along the right border of ENA 3264.3r. MCD.
