  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

[…] A third possibility which Goitein does not mention—it may refer to the Muʾminī dinars minted by ʿAbd al-Muʾmin, the founder of the Almohad dynasty, and this exchange rate of 52.67:100 would be plausible based on information from Ibn Jubayr (e.g. https://shamela.ws/book/11203/26). […] The addressee is not explicitly identified; he appears to be an authority in either the Jewish or Islamic community. The letter seems to be a complaint and an appeal for assistance against the behaviors (apparently wage theft) of al-Muʿallim Nissim and al-Muʿallim Bekhor (or potentially Baḥur, if بخور is an error for بحور). The sender repeatedly emphasizes his poverty, although the large sums of money he refers to (1000s and 10000s of a silver denomination, likely medins) suggest that this may be rhetorical or relative poverty.

ʿĀşık ʿÖmer was unquestionably a mystic, although whether he belonged to a Sufi order is less clear. […] The object of af- fection is one Meḥmed Shah, who may be a Sufi master but could also be the Ottoman sultan Meḥmed IV (r. 1058–99 AH/1648–87 CE), the first emperor under whom ʿĀşık ʿÖmer saw military service.... In the introduction to her edition, Jane Hathaway notes: "T-S AS 178.88 gives voice to Salmūn himself, who petitions a high official, possibly the governor of Egypt, to take action against rapacious ‘kāshifs’ men’ who steal the sheep and other provisions that form part of the māl-i mīrī, the money and provisions that Egypt delivered to the imperial palace every year. […] The followers of this kāshif and other Nile Delta kāshifs are surely the ‘kāshifs’ men’ against whom Salmūn rails. In fact, this annual ritual may have given the Buḥayra kāshif’s men the perfect opportunity to pilfer and damage the provisions intended for the palace."
