Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Nahray writes that he is traveling with both Muslim and Jewish on the boat of al-Dīb{ā}jī ("the brocade dealer") — or more probably al-Dībjī ("the Maldivian"), as argued by Nazim Sattar in the May 2023 Fragment of the Month (https://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/departments/taylor-schechter-genizah-research-unit/fragment-month/fotm-2023/fragment-3). […] Yaḥyā was to write an account, deduct customs and other expenses, and then to sell as much as seemed appropriate, but then inform ʿAllān , who was to instruct as to whether they would sell the entire shipment or only part of it; he mentions, for example, that they might sell the cowrie shells in Spain. […] He tells ʿAllān to hold onto letters that he had left behind, as they contained accounts. Nahray concludes by saying that he didn't expect the voyage to produce much profit; he ultimately sent 100 dinars to Maḍmūn with the hopes that it might more successfully return gains.

[…] His riding animal brings him to the lands of Banū Shaybān and he enters the courtyard of a house. A woman calls out to extend hospitality, and he responds "yā sayyida, how can a frightened, pursued, terrified, persecuted person find peace... no one can rest with the government after him." Identification and join by Alan Elbaum with the assistance of the Dicta Genizah Search website for the MiDRASH Automatic Transcriptions (https://zenodo.org/records/17734473). There are a few interesting variants here compared to the other copies: - There is no header (T-S 8J16.23 starts ולה איצא ימדח סידנא מצמון נגיד עם יי) - A trivial change of אברהם בנו יגו to אברהם נין יגו - A significant change of the recipient: instead of בנו יפת (referring to Maḍmūn the son of Yefet) it says בנו מחפוץ ("the son of Maḥfūẓ").

Relations between the various communities were very tense, as testified by Yehuda Alharizi, who visited Jerusalem in 1214. Yiṣḥaq, containing 20 lines of polite phrases in Hebrew, another 6 in Arabic, and 3 announcing that he was unable to locate a certain person in the ministry of finance (dār al-zimām) in Cairo; he was told that the official left to visit his father in Dilāṣ. There are also some self-pitying lines about the writer's illness and unemployment. […] Yiṣḥaq, which may continue onto the upper margin of recto — the writer asks 'to close the account' and regrets to be unable to travel as he had no weapons to fight with. The writer may have reused a sheet of Arabic accounts, the beginnings of ~8 lines of which are visible on verso.
