The letter is written on a long and narrow rotulus, in Arabic script with a single word in Hebrew script (the Hebrew part of the name of Abū l-Ḥasan al-Hod, likely the same man who appears in ENA 4011.62 (PGPID 775), dated by Gil to the early 13th century and by Goitein to the late 12th century). […] The sender reports that he has received letters from Abū l-Ḥasan al-Hod and from Nissim Ibn Qudayra (the same family name appears in T-S NS 226.124 and T-S AS 168.221). He reports encountering traders in Asyūṭ who had 80 raṭls of silk, some dyed and some raw, but he was unable to obtain any of it.

It seems that the letter originally ended here. The sender later adds: "Traders have arrived from Benghazi (Barnīq) with the news that all of the ships have set out." […] There is a dispute between the Maghribīs and the prominent Alexandrian Ben Naḥum family. There is an enigmatic sentence "they have a single head, while we have 100 heads."

He was assassinated by Badr al-Jamālī, among other rebels, including Nāṣir al-Dawla, upon entering Egypt for their insurgents and rebels against the state which caused political unrest in the country for almost a decade (1062-1072). […] Hamūd, also Ibn Hamdān or Ibn Hamdūn, (the name appears with variations in historical sources) I.e., the name of Nāṣir al-Dawla as giving an account of these events. Badr al-Jamālī entered Egypt in 467/1075, hence this letter could be dated to that year.

Friedman deduces that the year is probably 1291 or 1292, because David Maimonides was in exile in ʿAkko from his enemies in Egypt from approximately 1285–89, and the Muslim conquest of ʿAkko from the Crusaders in 1291 is a likely occasion for a Jewish woman to have been taken captive and need to be redeemed.

It is interesting to note the ethical note introduced into this medical business by the sentence: 'since my entire aim in this matter is to seek the nearness to God'. […] There are two blocks of text in Maimonides's hand on verso, at ninety degrees to each other. One is almost entirely illegible, does not appear to relate to the question on recto, and (very speculatively) could be a responsum for a legal question that the writer sent separately (though Stern would differ, as he read "dirham of lemon" where I read "shall be bound by a vow").

Many greetings at the end, including to the widow of Abū l-Faraj Ibn Alqāsh.
