Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

The section on verso reads like the ending of a high register letter. Verso: In a different hand, legal records or drafts in Judaeo-Arabic. […] The dates are missing in some of the entries, but they all seem to be dated between Adar I 1459 Seleucid and Elul 1462 Seleucid, corresponding to 1147–51 CE: (1) Bū Saʿd will repay 0.5 dinars per month[…] (4) The witnesses and the son of the cantor testify that Ibn al-Amshāṭī owes a certain amount. This entry appears to be quite long and involved, but is difficult to read due to the imprint of other text on top of it.

A part of a decree from the court of the Fātimid Caliph al-Ẓāhir, protecting the rights of the Qaraite communities in Palestine against Rabbanite encroachment, 1034 CE. The original decree was kept in Cairo, in the Qaraite community archive at the Dār Simḥa synagogue. […] The second section of the decree is addressed to amīr al-juyūsh, the governor of Syria and Palestine (who at the time was Anūshtekīn al-Duzbarī), to enforce this decree. The decree should be kept by its receivers (line 44). The entire affair is discussed in Rustow, Archive, pp. 249-263.

A list of calculations on 7v has a peculiar entry "baqshīsh del kalsado de Kandia" ("a payment from the drunkard from Candia"). See Kohen and Kohen-Gordon's dictionary entry of Ladino for "kalsado". In the later folios, the content shifts away from entries about people's payments to inventory lists of goods such as: "asucar/sugar", "limon/lemon," portuqal/orange," "miliḥ/salt" (10v).

The rental agreement is for a two-part property and usage of certain contents most of which are explained in Judaeo-Arabic rather than Hebrew: an upper-story apartment (עלייה) and a ṭayāra (טייארה), which may have been some kind of animal enclosure, perhaps an aviary for raising birds. This reading is based on the Badawi & Hinds Egyptian Arabic Dictionary's entry for the word طيّارة, "temporary animal pen in a field." […] The later lines of the entry mention the ketubba of Yom Ṭov's wife Raḥma, in connection with the transaction.

The Qaraite community endeavored to help him, but Shelomo wound up staying in the Rabbanite quarter and refused their offers of assistance. He fell sick and died. There ensued a terrible conflict between the Rabbanite and Qaraite communities, in which it seems the Rabbanites went to the local Muslim authorities ('the Chelebi' and 'the Judge'), insisted that the deceased Shelomo was not of their party, and said bad things about the Qaraites. The authorities sent 'two great eunuchs' to despoil the Qaraite neighborhood; it was decided that the Qaraites owed 30,000 esedi gurush; the synagogue was plundered and two of the best houses were confiscated and turned over to the Rabbanites.
