How to Search

General Search

Use keywords or phrases in any language to return matching or similar results across all fields. Arabic script searches will return both Arabic and Judaeo-Arabic transcription content.

Regular Expression Search

Use Hebrew or Arabic script to find precise matches in the transcriptions. See How to Search page for advanced use cases.

Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

The expression "a son, her liver" (ולד כבדהא, if read and understood correctly) may derive from the Arabic expression "our children are our livers" (awlādunā akbādunā), which in turn derives from a poem by Ḥiṭṭān b. al-Muʿallā al-Ṭāʾī cited in Dīwān al-Ḥamāsa: وإنّـمــا أولادُنــا بيننـــا أكـبــادُنـا تمشــي علــى الأرضِ / لو هَبّتِ الريحُ على بعضهـم لامتنعتْ عيـني من الغَمْضِ.

Someone had arranged for their salvage/release and deposited them in Fustat, in the presence of Avraham Maimonides, with al-Shaykh al-Muwaffaq (‘Successful’). The writer’s business partner later encountered some difficulties in getting Muwaffaq to deliver the bundle, and he made a public report on these difficulties in Aden in Maḍmūn b. […] The Tripolitan merchant ʿAlī the Maghrebi was instructed to bring the merchandise with him when he came to Aden or have an oath imposed on Muwaffaq for breach of trust.

If the mention of ʿAbd Allāh in l. 2 refers to Ibn Yijū's associate the nākhudā Abū ʿAbd Allāh who died in 1146, then these accounts would date to 1146 or earlier. […] But it is not implausible, given that he often reused scrap paper later for calendars and/or accounts years later. Identified by Alan Elbaum.
