Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Nissīm, Fusṭāṭ, to his cousin Barhūn b. Ṣāliḥ al-Tāhartī, probably in Egypt, ca. 1045 (Gil). Nahray anxiously mentions to Barhūn that he has already paid the amīr's emissary, Abū Ishāq, 150 dīnārs in Fusṭāṭ; it concerns him that the amīr is still demanding the same from him in Alexandria. "If, God forbid, he continues to demand payment from you after he knows that it was already collected from me, then you will certainly remind him of his own letter to his emissary Abū Isḥāq, so that he will return to us what he has taken from us." Also mentions a shipment of pearls. Nahray also sends his blessing to Khalfa from the Tāhartī family on the occasion of his marriage to a woman from the ʿUqba family.

Recto: Letter from Yehuda b. Aharon b. al-ʿAmmānī, in Alexandria, to Abū l-Majd Meir b. […] Yehuda rebukes Meir for sending him vague requests without specifying the opening lines of the piyyutim, which cools Yehuda's ardor for fulfilling his requests (r12-17). He also asks Meir to send back the note about the reading of Deut. 1:44, which Yehuda had seen in the Tāj (the Aleppo Codex) (r17-19). He also wants Meir to send him the fatwa that relates to Yehuda's court case against a judge (r20-22).

Ḥusayn reports that people from "the southern land" (bilād al-qibliyya) have been asking for help because of the actions of the lieutenant (al-khalīfa), the Master of the Shipmasts (ṣāhib al-suwār), and a deputy (nāʾib) of the Qūsa, a clan in Upper Egypt. As a result, the "commander" (al-amīr) reprimands the lieutenant, and has been sending instructions to protect the people of Nubia (ahl bilād al-nūba).
