Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

The currency לב׳ נק׳ אש׳ used in both documents is presumably a kind of silver coin (לבנים נקרים אשפרוש). In earlier documents, when the Ottoman akçe was still minted, the term levanīm was equivalent to akçe/aspros, but here it may be the silver para/medin. Esedi guruş coinage is also mentioned here as gurush arayot (e.g. ll. 15-16).

Some of the entries where prices are mentioned also reference types of coinage. On the upper right of the verso, line 2, the word "בונדוק / bunduk" appears which is in all likelihood a quantity of gold Venetian ducats. In the same column below that, the term "מתקיל / metqil" appears and elsewhere on the verso as another form of coinage. The word Istanbulī is also used in various accounts but its exact numismatic meaning is unclear.

Letter from an unnamed Fatimid official in Alexandria to Najīb al-Dawla. Dating: second half of the eleventh century. 36 lines preserved, written in an elegant chancery hand with very wide line-spacing. Najīb al-Dawla is a higher-level official than the author of the letter, but the author also has quite a bit of command and responsibility, and the ability to issue to levy and cancel taxes and to issue decrees on the spot in a region of the delta, so perhaps he is a local governor — although he refers to a different ʿāmil in his letter. […] The author's wish to receive more official duties from Najīb al-Dawla, a request he expresses with what might be a raʾy clause (but there is a lacuna). 10.

Provides information about Ibn Migash unknown from Avraham Ibn Dawud's Sefer ha-Qabbala, which portrays Ibn Dawud as a Torah scholar, in contrast to his grandfather the courtier (who was forced to flee from Granada to Seville in the first half of the eleventh century); the grandson, born in Seville on 1 Adar 4837 [28 January 1077], studied with Yiṣḥaq al-Fāsī when the latter came to Lucena when Ibn Migash was around 12 years old until he was around 26 years old and was devoted to Torah study. But Friedman notes that the panegyrics that Yehuda ha-Levi wrote for Ibn Migash seem to allude to the grandson's secular pursuits and standing as well.

In the introduction to her edition, Jane Hathaway observes: "This torn, crumpled, and stained document, in Ottoman Turkish, is another undated petition to an unnamed official.
