Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

    Accounts in Judaeo-Arabic. Dated on the verso in the first row of entries: 6 Ramaḍān _43 AH but the scribe omitted the hundreds digit. […] For each day of the week, lists the boats (qārib) belonging to different people (Muḥammad, Shihāb al-Dīn, Naṣr al-Dīn. . .) and commercial goods and numbers associated with them. An entry mentions "rice from Damietta" on the left side of the recto and the town Minyat Salsīl is mentioned in entries on both the recto and verso (modern-day Mīt Salsīl, ~25 miles due south of Damietta). At least one other potential placename appears in the entries: (verso) Minyat Budayr. Needs further examination.

One of the entries mentions "a period of two years, from Sivan [4]813 to Sivan [4]815." So presumably these accounts date to shortly before Sivan 4813 AM, which is 1053 CE.

    Commercial accounts in Ladino dated July 1734 CE (15 Tammuz 5494 AM). […] The second line of the heading mentions a "granada Ingleza" (גראנאדה אינגליזה) that will be "delivered in Livorno to Se[nyor] Yaʿacov Abastado" (granada Ingleza a entregaren Liorne). In this context it seems unlikely that "granada" meant "English pomegranate" or "English hand grenade[!]"[…] Line 9 clearly referencess a shipping vessel in the entry "por nolo di djerma." The latter term "djerma" refers to a class of "small flat-boats that allowed the transport of cargo... to the mouth of the Nile" before goods were transferred onto bigger sea-borne vessels.

Some of the entries begin with the Judeo-Arabic word "wuṣūl / ווצול" within the phrase "wuṣūl de" which could indicate incoming payments for example "wuṣūl de Abd Raḥman" (l. 18r). The entry furthest down along the lower border of the fragment also mentions Yosef Haggai ("יוספ חגאי").
