Letter from Sulaymān b. Samhūn b. al-Sahl, in Tilimsān, to Abū Sahl Menashshe b. David Ibn Labrāṭ, in Fustat. Dating: ca. 1050 CE. The sender has not heard from anyone in Egypt for "several years" because "the caravans have been cut off" (li-inqitāʿ al-qawāfil). He requests that the addressee send back news with the same pilgrims (ḥujjāj) who are bearing this letter for him. He especially asks after his maternal uncle Avraham and his maternal aunt Sitāt. He reports that he has one wife and two sons as well as a millstone and a shop and a large amount of capital (the phrase "500 dinars" is repeated twice). As for his (late?) sister, she has two sons in Qalʿat Ḥammād and an elder daughter. Otherwise "the news of the West" is good, all is safe and the roads are secure. He concludes by asking for news of the Yeshivot, and who is the current Head of the Yeshiva, as he wishes to write to him. The address on verso is written in both Arabic script and Hebrew script. The Arabic address may have been dictated to a Muslim scribe who misunderstood the name "Menashshe" (rendering it من الشا).(Information in part from Mediterranean Society, III, p. 239.)
