Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

  15. 3415State documentBodl. MS heb. b 18/23

The tenants of the pious foundation (ḥabs) of the mosque have fallen in arrears and owe about ten dinars for the period ending Rajab 415 AH (September 1024). He requests that a decree (manshūr, line 11: literally, an open letter, a decree without a seal) be issued to the governor (ʿāmil) and administrator (mutawallī) of the district that housed the mosque asking them to help the deputy, Mūsā b. Azhar, by supporting his efforts to extract payment from the tenants; by sending him money directly; and by generally enforcing the terms of the trust. The scribe who copied the biblical passages has glued this petition to another petition to Sitt al-Mulk, ENA 3974.3 (PGPID 19304), to form a single rotulus.

A Muslim court deed documenting the endowment of private property for communal purposes. […] The property dedicated is three quarters (line 3) of a house found “in protected Cairo, in the khut ḥārat al-yahūd in a dead-end street (darb ghayr nāfiḍ) used to be known as darb al-sharīf and currently known as darb al-kanīsa al-turkīyya” (line 4). The endowment should be used, so it seems, for the maintenance of the Turkish synagogue “mentioned above”, and “the poor among the community of the European Jews (al-masākīn min tāʾifat al-yahūd al-faranj)” (line 23).

Fol. 2v is a copy of an engagement (shiddukhin) contract in Hebrew written in a different hand (though same hand as the pen trials underneath). […] They are probably by the same scribe/geomancer. The geomancy entries do not necessarily date to the same year as the engagement contract, however since they mention Muḥammad ʿAlī, they can't be any earlier than 1805 CE.
