Description

Recto: Legal document in the hand of Shelomo b. Eliyyahu. Location: Fustat. Opens by stating that on Tuesday, 23 Adar II 1540 Seleucid (= 20 March 1229 CE, a legal deed was drawn up in which Abū l-Rabīʿ Sulaymān aka Shelomo Segan ha-Kohanim b. Abū l-ʿAlāʾ Meshullam ha-Kohen Kelil ha-Yofi Ibn al-Istibānī acknowledged a debt of 260 dinars to Abū l-Munajjā b. Abū Saʿd known as Ibn al-Labbān, to be repaid as a lump sum whenever the creditor desired it. Then, Abū l-Rabīʿ Sulaymān presented an Islamic deed (ḥujja islāmiyya) stating that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-Ghaniyy al-Iskandarānī al-Tājir known as Ibn Sanad al-Tājir owes him 100 dinars by way of qirāḍ. He gave this ḥujja to Abū l-Munajjā and told him, "You are acquainted with this trader. When he returns from travel, obtain the amount of this ḥujja from him, and subtract it from the 260 dinars I owe you." Abū l-Munajjā accepted this offer. Verso of T-S AS 153.250 (PGPID 29015) concerns the same transaction and contains some identical language.
