Description
Legal/official document in Arabic script. Drawn up in the majlis al-khidma of an amir with grand titles (...majd al-khilāfa ʿizz al-dīn jamāl al-umarāʾ fakhr al-mulk sayf al-dawla wa-[...]hā b. al-M[...]m ṣanīʿat amīr al-muʾminīn...). Dated: 26 Rabīʿ II 504 AH = 11 November 1110 CE. In which Rawʿ(?) b. Ḥammūd, a Muslim funduqānī (proprietor of a caravanserai), undertakes to transport to the Ṣināʿa ("the Arsenal"), the river port of Old Cairo, all falat (goods that had evaded the payment of dues) and all those for which customs had to be paid, whether they had been brought to his own place or to other caravanserais, or had otherwise come to his knowledge. بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

حضر مجلس خدمة الامير المقدم الامير الامين مجد الخلافة عز الدين جمال الامرا فخر الملك

سيف الدولة…. العميم صنيعة امير المؤمنين له منصوبها (؟) ومتولي الحرب

بالصناعتين وما جمع اليه من الخدمة الشريفة للد......بكله مزروع (من روع؟) بن حمود الفندقاني

واشرط على نفسه ان حينما وصل الى فندقه من الفلت في البضاعة

وغيرها الذي يجب عليها المكس احضره الى الصناعة المحروسة وكذلك
-
مهما ظفر به من الفلت الواصل الى الفنادق بمصر احضر جميع ذلك

الى الصناعة المحروسة وقتما اطلع عليه اعلمته مجلس الخدمة واغتنم على ذلك

…لمعطيه…ومتى لم تجد علامة(؟) ذلك كان عليه…وبذلك

واشهد عليه في السادس والعشرين من ربيع الاخر سنة اربع وخمس مائة

- In the name of God, the compassionate, the merciful.
- There appeared at the majlis al-khidma the supervising, trustworthy amīr, glory of the caliphate, noble one of the religion, ornament of the amīrs, pride of the ruler,
- sword of the realm ... protégé of the commander of the faithful ... entrusted of battle
- in the two customs ports and to the noble service that adjoins it ... Mazrūʿ b. Ḥammūd the caravanserai proprietor.
- He took on the stipulatation that whenever any goods evading customs payment arrived at his caravanserai, whether merchandise
- or other goods on which customs are due, he would bring them to the customs port, may it be guarded. Likewise,
- whatever such goods succeed in reaching his caravanserai in Fusṭāṭ (without paying customs), he will bring all of them
- to the customs port (in Cairo), may it be guarded, whenever he comes there, and the majlis al-khidma will be so informed and will confiscate them.
