Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Friedman, who edited the document, could not decipher the name or title and suggested אלמשוק, but the reading אבן אלמשנקץ is confirmed by the memorial list which mentions "the house of the sons of al-Mushanqiṣ", headed by Sa'adya, one of whose sons is Shelomo (PGPID 19556), and also other 13th-century documents which mention this family (PGPID 4617, PGPID 4520, PGPID 40229). […] Written under the authority of the Nagid David (d. 1300) b. Avraham b. Moshe Maimonides. […] Friedman deduces that the year is probably 1291 or 1292, because David Maimonides was in exile in ʿAkko from his enemies in Egypt from approximately 1285–89, and the Muslim conquest of ʿAkko from the Crusaders in 1291 is a likely occasion for a Jewish woman to have been taken captive and need to be redeemed. The Nagid David, back in Cairo, could have presided over this legal case due to his connections to the remaining Jewish community in ʿAkko.
