Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

There are two chief complaints. (1) "Members of the (larger) Palestinian synagogue had enticed many of those belonging to the Iraqi one to join their house of worship They held out lures, such as a promise that children would be able to participate more often by being called up to the Torah, since the Scriptural readings in the Palestinian rite were short (and, hence, required less preparation)." (2) "The second reason for the desolate state of the synagogue was the despotic behavior of the beadle (khādim), named al-rayyis Abū l-Ḥasan b. Ghazāl. This Abū l-Ḥasan had been lording it over the congregation, acting more like a rayyis than a beadle, giving orders, taking charge of litigations, and even forcing Mevorakh's own muqaddam (he is called muqaddam in one letter and nāʾib in the other) to cower in his presence. […] In the AIU letter, the sender describes what may be a further deterioration: "Only a few people... remain in the Babylonian congregation, and they are mainly indigents," as this sender witnessed for himself when he attended services on the previous Shabbat together with Ḥalfon b. Menashshe (called here Abū Saʿīd b. Abū Sahl Ibn al-Qaṭāʾif).

For the relationship between these terms, see Ali b. Isa's Tadhkirat al-Kaḥḥālīn, translated into English by Casey Wood as Memorandum Book of a Tenth-Century Oculist (1936). […] Recto 16 - Verso 5: The writer tells the recipient to pawn a table for 5 dirhams and to bring the money for a consultation with Abu l-Ma'ruf b. al-Taffal; the writer has also written Abu l-Ma'ruf a letter describing the wife's ophthalmia. […] The recipient is to go to Abu l-Surur (b. The list is followed by a paragraph mentioning the names Mūsā b. Ghulayb (known from other documents); Barhūn again; Fustat/Egypt; al-Nūtī(?). At the bottom and again in the margin mentions Abū Brāhīm or Ibrāhīm ʿAyyāsh (perhaps ʿAyyāsh b. Ṣadaqa). On verso, adds that if the addressee is unable to fulfill this order, he should not entrust it to somebody else; instead he should wait for the arrival of Faraḥ Ibn al-Jāsūs and give him the purse for taking over the task (פאן לם ימכן חצורך פי שי [מנ]הא פלא תכלף אלאמר ללגיר תדע אלצרה לוצול פרח בן אלגאסוס יתולא שראהא ואלסלם). At 180 degrees on verso there is also what may be a brief Arabic address with the name Yaḥyā b. Ṭū[...], but this is preceded by the word 'ḥawāʾij' so may not be an address at all.

Ibrahim b. Ṣadaqa known as Ibn Ṣafar, the Rabbanite Jew; in 1499 this owner sold the house to his son and to his nephew in equal parts, they are identified as Qaraite Jews (the nephew then transfers his part to his sister); in 1506 the sister sold her part, half of the house, to another Qaraite woman named Sarah bnt. ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid known as Ibnat al-Ḥawwāsh; in July 1517 the same woman bought the second half of the house from the son of Ibn Safar mentioned above in 1499; in 1535 she sold the house to two other Qaraite women.

Written on parchment (14 lines). In the hand of Ḥalfon b. Menashshe (fl. 1100–1138 CE). He reports that he has come up with a good idea to resolve a documentation dilemma, namely that before something is deleted in a certain document as he had previously agreed with the addressee, the witnesses should be summoned again and a new qinyan should be made, so that they cannot complain after the fact that they never signed the document in its ultimate form and that it has been "falsified" or "forged" (muzawwar, line 9).
