Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Both are addressed to al-Shaykh al-Muhadhdhab. In Judaeo-Arabic. Dating: ca. 1334 CE, as both seem to relate to the same affair. Letter from an older Maghribī traveler, in Alexandria, to his cousin, somewhere in the Maghrib. […] Otherwise, he will remain alive." Note that "yastanshiq" typically means "inhale" or "snuff" (e.g., water for ritual ablutions) rather than "hiccup."

Letter from Mordekhai ha-Levi Mizraḥi, probably in Meron or Safed, to Moshe Ḥayyim and Yiṣḥaq Ḥayyim, unknown location. This fragment also contains the end of the letter from ENA 2634.2 (dated: 7 Av, 5656 AM, which is 1896 CE). […] Mordekhai reminds the addressee in a roundabout way to send him money (lirot) for his pains. He also seems to instruct the addressee to name the newborn son Mordekhai after him. He asks again for money, for he and his son Yiṣḥaq are in difficult straits. He also mentions a certain M. ʿEzra b. Yaʿaqov Dā'ūdī in the addressee's location.

The sender acknowledges receipt of a letter from the eparch, in which the eparch reported having sent letters to the commander (al-amīr) and the executive officer (al-shadīd), urging them to address the sender's requests, which seem to deal with a slave (raqīq) belonging to the king, a sum of cash, and two other slaves (al-raʾsayn; the numerical signifier "heads" is used to count slaves, but here the word is used by itself). […] The letter mentions a man named Yūsū, possibly a servant, who has also been acting on the sender's behalf and is the bearer of this letter as he travels to the eparch. The sender asks the eparch to send 19 dīnārs and eight dirhams, and cautions that if the recipient does not act fast, he will lose out on a favorable exchange rate where the sender is. He reports also sending gold dīnārs with Yūsū, and says there is nothing else good to send.
