1. I am writing, may God prolong the life of my lord
2. and preserve his glory, support, happiness,
3. well-being and grace and vanquish his enemies,
4. from Alexandria in a state of well-being
5. and good health. My longing for him is strong, may
6. God, in His generosity, bring us together in the most favorable circum­stances,
7. God willing. I would like to inform my lord
8. that considerable time has passed since I have read a letter from him.

10. upon arriving in Alexandria, I would find letters from him
11. there. I had hoped to be able
12. to go up to Fustat, and then (to attend to the matter of?) those
13. boats and the qārib in the care of ʿUmayr.
14. I wish that I had gone up (to Fustat).
15. (Instead) I got involved in the purchase of wheat, 3 (units) at
16. the rate of 102 (dirhams per irdabb). However, this is what God the exalted wanted.
17. I arrived safely, and no one has done
18. even a ḥabba's worth of business with it (the wheat?). I am asking
19. my lord if he pleases to send
20. me the price (realized from the sale) of the nuts and use it to purchase for me
21. a piece of silver, which he can send to me
22. in the care of whomever he sees fit. By God,

Verso

1. arrived was 4 ½ (irdabb) per dīn(ār). However, I did not buy
2. anything for you. Today, fava beans are worth
3. one dīn(ār) per irdabb, and good quality wheat is worth
4. 4½ dīn(ārs) per irdabb and cost me 
5. two dīnārs minus one-sixth.
6. I have already sold for you the skins of olive oil
7. and real­ized for them the sum of two dīnārs  and one qīrāṭ. If you wish,
8. you can deduct two dīnārs  and one qīrāṭ from the price I realize from the nuts
9.  and send me the balance, by God,
10. for I am in need of every ḥabba; I do not have
11. even a single dirham. Your letter reached me in which
12. you tell me, "If you go out (to the countryside), buy
13. some wheat; buy two dīnārs' worth." I had
14. bought some for you along with the entire amount that
15. I bought (for myself), but I will not inflict a loss on you
16. at all, nor will I charge anything against your account, but rather,
17. whatever happens, if it cannot be sold,
18. then please send it with whomever you see fit.
19. Likewise, the small container (shukayra) in which (I packed)
20. the nuts—please send it. If there is anything you 
21. need, please honor me with a request for it. Please take note of this.
22. As for the cistern, please inform me of the place where it is faulty so that I can have it repaired,
23. since for two months already I have noticed water leaking out.
