Letter addressed to 'the boy' Abū l-Futūḥ al-Muhadhdhab the physician in the Dār al-[...] in al-Bāṭiliyya (evidently an area of New Cairo which was originally a garrison). In Arabic script, introduced by biblical verses in Hebrew including Psalms 20:5. Concerned with business matters, such as the sale of a mule for 20 dinars, to be paid in twenty monthly installments. Mentions people such as Sulaymān and Abū l-Riḍā. The sender asks the addressee to intervene on behalf of the bearer, the son of Abū l-Futūḥ al-Tannūrī, with Nāṣir al-Dawla Barghash concerning something to do with an iqṭāʿ.   2. الولد العزيز الشيخ الاجل المهذب الموفق اسعد الله جده
  3. وقرن بالتوفيق حله وعقده مخدوم بافضل سلام واعلمه دامت
  4. معاليه انني قد سيرت له عدة كتب اعلمته فيها ان لم يصلني فيه سوى
  5. كتابين وانني في كل اسبوع اسير اليه عدة كتب وما اعلم هل
  6. تصل ام لا ولا تسل ما كان جرى على قلبنا كلما سمعنا ان المولا
  7. مريض وما انبسط قلبنا وسكن روعنا الا في هذه الايام
  8. وانا قد [[اخلينا]] //اخلينا// الحانوت كما رسم والبغلة بخير وبغلتي ابعتها
  9. بعشرين دينار دينار في كل شهر وسليمان قال انهم اخذوا
  10. منه الشهر واحاله الكاتب على بن شراقي وهذا الذي جرى
  11. واخوك بكل نعمة ويجري جميعنا في نعمة الله سبحانه ما نعدم سوى
  12. النظر اليك ومسير هذه الاحرف هذا الصبي ولد
  13. السيخ بو الفتوح التنوري حرق عليه سلة بسبب دابة
  14. اشتراها للشيخ ابي الرضا وشاهدوا عليه واخذوا

  1. [Hebrew:] With abundant peace, etc. May He grant you all your heart’s desires, etc.
  2. The dear son, the most distinguished shaykh, the refined and successful—may God make his fortune felicitous
  3. and join success to all his undertakings—our honored master, with the most excellent greetings. Let him know—may his exalted rank endure—
  4. that I have sent him several letters in which I informed him that I have received from him no more
  5. than two letters. Each week I send him several letters, yet I do not know whether
  6. they reach him or not. You cannot imagine what passed through my heart each time we heard that our master
  7. was ill; our hearts found no ease, nor our anxiety any calm except in these past days.
  8. I have vacated the shop as instructed. The mule is well, and I have sent off my mule for
  9. twenty dinars—[to be paid] one dinar each month. Sulaymān said that they took from him the [payment for] the month, and the clerk referred him to Ibn Shirākī. This is what has occurred.
  10. Your brother remains in every blessing, and all of us continue in the bounty of God, exalted be He. We lack nothing except
  11. the sight of you. The bearer of this letter is a young boy, the son
  12. of Shaykh Abū al-Futūḥ al-Tannūrī. A charge was brought against him concerning a basket, on account of an animal
  13. he had purchased for Shaykh Abū al-Riḍā. Witnesses testified against him, and they seized
  14. the animal, the price, and what was intended. It is requested of our master that he command Nāṣir al-Dawla Barghash,

  1. the owner of the iqṭāʿ, upon the arrival of this note,
  2. to secure his release, that no one should harrass him,
  3. and that his animal—or his money—be restored to him.
  4. And that you know of what is due, by right, to our master Shaykh
  5. al-Raʾīs Abū al-Riḍā; for if this matter
  6. is repeated against him […].
