Mark Cohen, The Voice of the Poor in the Middle Ages (Princeton University Press, 2005).
- In (your) na(me, O Merciful)
- Your slave Joseph
- kisses the ground before (your) ex(ellency), hono(r), gr(eatness), ho(liness), pre(cious),
- el(evated), pe(arl), wr(eath), cr(own), gl(ory), (our) ma(ster) and te(acher),
- Yeshuʿa the great Dignitary among the Jews, may God his Rock protect him
- and be his succor, and informs you
- that your slave is being killed by the cold
- and by hunger. Your slave cannot face asking
- anything from anyone. Your slave's request
- from our merciful and charitable master is for
- help with money for a robe. You will earn a
Margin
- reward that [is written], "When you se[e the naked],
- clothe him [and]
- do not ignore [your own kin]" (Isaiah 58:7).
- Your slave in[f]orms you
- about this. And peace.
